Are You Ready for the Las Vegas Raiders?

0

Roger Goodell isn’t dismissing Las Vegas as a potential home for an NFL franchise when asked about Raiders owner Mark Davis’ interest in moving his team there, but says that the Raiders need to look at other options:

They need to evaluate those alternatives. I think their ultimate decision is a long ways off. There are several cities that have a tremendous interest in the Raiders. I’m hopeful also that Oakland will be one of those and that we can avoid any relocation to start with. Those are ultimately decisions about where they go and the impact that the potential gambling that we’d have to deal with.

Traditionally, the NFL has strongly opposed the idea of America’s gambling capital hosting a franchise. The Raiders have spent years trying to build a new stadium in Oakland, and the team made a failed attempt to build a stadium with the San Diego Chargers in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson. The NFL In January instead gave the St. Louis Rams approval to move to the Los Angeles market and gave the Chargers the option to move in with the Rams at an eventual new stadium in Inglewood.

According to the NYTimes, there are several problems with this plan:

Many owners, though, rejected the idea of a team in Las Vegas because of the taint of gambling. Several of them said at the league’s annual meeting that they preferred that the Raiders remain in the Bay Area because of the team’s long history there, and because it was an affluent region and a top media market.

Is New Vegas Stadium Waste of Money?

0

Interesting news that came across our desk this morning via a press release. A recent poll of Nevada voters shows an overwhelming majority support publicly funding the plan to modernize, renovate and expand the Las Vegas Convention Center, a proven generator of jobs and economic development. However, they oppose using taxpayer dollars to pay for the construction of an NFL-size stadium, according to the survey results from Global Strategy Group. Among the poll’s key findings:

•2/3 of Nevada Voters Support Las Vegas Convention Center Expansion Plan
•Nevadans would rather see room tax revenues devoted to the convention center plan by a 13-point margin (51% convention center/38% stadium).
•57% of Nevadans believe the convention center expansion has “clear public benefits,” compared to just 25% who say the same about the stadium proposal
•63% View Convention Center Plan as a “Safe Investment” of Taxpayer Funds

The results are consistent across the state, but likely voters in Clark County particularly support using revenue from the Room Tax to support the long-planned convention center expansion. See the attached polling memo for more details.

The convention center expansion is a $1.4 billion investment in an industry that is already a proven success for Nevada. In addition to 67 percent of Nevada voters, the expansion has the support of elected leaders, the gaming industry and labor because it strengthens an industry that is already working for Nevadans and will put more Nevadans to work. The proposed stadium would divert money from the convention center expansion and funnel it into the construction of a sports stadium. While the convention center expansion would benefit every operator on the Strip, the proposed stadium would disproportionately benefit a single company.

The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee will meet Thursday to discuss the competing proposals as it prepares to render a recommendation to Governor Sandoval in July.

Tao Group’s Beauty and Essex to Launch May 16th in Cosmopolitan

0

Chris Santos, known for being a judge on the popular TV show “Chopped,” has announced that May 16th will be the start date for dinner at the “Beauty and Essex” restaurant in the Cosmopolitan. This restaurant has been in the plan for quite a while with rumors that it would be taking over the failed Comme Ca space owned by David Myer for the last two years.

Celebrity Reporter Robin Leach describes the place as:

a 10,000-square-foot space with more than 230 seats for dining and an additional 90 seats in the bar. The restaurant will be themed in jewels of all forms: pearls, gemstones, antiques and heirlooms. The custom chandelier is comprised of thousands of draped pearls.A DJ will spin the wheels of steel from a gold booth. The restaurant, which is accessed by walking through a gritty pawnshop down a 40-foot-long corridor of framed vintage lockets leading to the decadence within of three ornate dining areas, has been a hit in New York City since it opened in 2010.

They are currently hiring for two positions, but more are expected to be open soon.

Victor Drai: People Sick of Vegas DJs

5

According to PageSix.com, DJs are fast on the way out in Las Vegas. The scathing article published on March 22nd, claims that most new venues will be snubbing DJs and instead looking at creating new experiences.  They give as an example the new nightclub at Wynn, Intrigue which, according to the Chief Operating Officer of the Wynn, Sean Christie is the “opposite of a big DJ-Driven Club.”

However the real story is the quote from Victor Drai, who basically has completely dismissed DJs in the industry by saying:

People are sick of the DJs in Vegas. It’s ridiculous to have the same five or six guys, pay them a fortune and lose money. It will reach a point where DJs are totally irrelevant.

This is pretty monumental, especially when you consider that Victor Drai just opened a mega night and day club, Drais less than two years ago. I’m curious what his investors think of his prediction?

Drai however isn’t the only person. Jon Taffer of “Bar Rescue” fame also agrees that the time is up for the Vegas Nightclub scene.

He was predicting the demise of Vegas clubs over two years ago. According to Taffer, “Eight of 10 people who come to our convention want to go to a bar more than a nightclub. They’re over 35. They don’t want to hear thumping all night long. Conventioneers want to sit in a bar, socialize, network.”

“There’s a concern in the general industry about, ‘What happens when the DJ thing really starts to turn?’ It seems to be flattening a little. I mean, how many times are people gonna come see Tiesto? How many times are you going to drive here for that?”

Niu Gu Elevates Asian Cuisine Off-Strip

2

Looking to up the ante in Chinatown with a spotless dining space plus a tea collection set to leave even The Strip’s formal fine dining spaces in the dust, Niu Gu from Chef Jimmy Li has been quietly making noise amongst Las Vegas most in-the-know diners, a Saturday evening visit showing signs of something special happening even though there remains some room to grow.

Actually open since the late 3rd quarter of 2015, but undergoing upgrades since the start of March through consultation with local beer and wine aficionado Joe Muscaglione, Niu Gu has recently dropped “Noodle House” from its name in favor of becoming a full-fledged Asian Kitchen, the menu not one of those hundred-item hodgepodges intended to please universally but instead focused on freshly made plates comprised of only the finest components, even the wok-fried items taking the time to individually cook ingredients one-by-one.

[supsystic-gallery id=’5′ position=’center’]

Taking service far more seriously than the rest of the restaurants on Jones, an important thing to note considering the fact that the same plaza contains China Mama, Chada Thai and Hachi Japanese Yakatori plus several more, those arriving at Niu Gu are greeted professionally at the podium before being led to seats, the space itself literally gleaming from the recently decorated walls right down to the bathroom floor.

Admitting a friendship with Mr. Muscaglione that includes several meals across The Valley, it was with menu deferred to he and the chef that the evening soon got started, an impassioned discussion of the teas followed by Organic Housemade Tofu topped tableside with Scallion Oil plus Crab and Tofu Soup that ate something like Egg-Drop with far more flavor, each bite smooth yet complex and compelling enough to want just another spoonful…and then “just” one more.

Presenting plates slowly, partially due to the presence of other tables but also so that our four-top could focus on flavors individually as well as when paired with tea, course two offered thinly sliced Beef Tongue marinated in soy, onions and peppers, the texture like velvet beneath poignant heat while “Fresh Seafood Salad” was unfortunately a bit sweeter than necessary, the plethora of berries unfortunately overwhelming the cream-coated Lobster meat.

Shocking me with the quality of a plump Oyster, the lightly steamed Bivalve bursting with brine atop a bed of shredded Daikon as Garlicky broth stewed beneath, a plate of spicy Asian Cucumber proved a refreshing bridge to bolder flavors, the Double Chili Shrimp deveined and delegged with shell split for peeling, though the better choice was eating them crispy with the carapace still in place.

Taking a Sichuan Spin on Lamb, the meaty Rack divided tableside by Joe with just enough time on the fire to render fat clear without turning the meat from pink, Niu Gu’s namesake Slow Roasted Short Rib was served up simultaneously, those opting for only one left to a tough choice as to which is better since each would undoubtedly top my list of “Must Haves.”

Seeing it unfit to leave without trying Li’s Noodles, in this case a classic Beef broth served chock-full of tender meat and baby Bok Choy with just enough spice to tingle without burning up the mouth, Chinese Yam Stir-Fry with Black Fungus was an elegant vegetarian dish for those opting for milder flavors, the deep fried Bao served as a side dish apparently common in some parts of China and delicious with a sidecar of lightly sweetened mayo.

Still; a work in progress as relates to dessert, the Taro Milk and Fruit certainly pleasant but actually less sweet than the Seafood Salad or the Bao, dinner ended with long discussion as ambient Asian music mixed with 80’s Pop-Standards, “More Than Words” by Extreme playing its third spin of the evening but mostly ignorable in the face of “Monkey Picked” Oolong with dramatic floral notes an almost buttery feel on the tongue.

FOUR STARS: Still a work in progress, the lack of liquor license notable while the dessert menu is perhaps a larger concern for me than others in town, Niu Gu represents a wholesale shift in culture for the restaurants on South Jones and Spring Mountain, Li’s cooking and Muscaglione’s guidance seemingly ready to go ‘all-in’ with an Strip-rivaling yet accessible Chinese Fine Dining approach.

RECOMMENDED: Rack of Lamb with Cumin, Lightly Steamed Garlic Oysters, Crab and Tofu Soup, Slow Roasted Angus Beef Short Rib.

AVOID: Fresh Seafood Salad was a touch too sweet while dessert was forgettable.

TIP: The full tea list is available in store with details on individual farms, tasting notes and leaves-to-cup concepts – service on average ranging $9-$12 with tableside steeping and service.

WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.

BLT Burger Shut Down by Vegas Health Police

0

BLT Burger at the Mirage might have a little “extra” in their food that no one wants to talk about. According to reports, BLT Burger at the Mirage has been shut down by the Southern Nevada Health District, because of what can only be called numerous health violations.

Susan Stapleton at Vegas Eater claims:

“BLT Burger initially earned a 39-demerit C grade from the health department on March 8. Inspectors returned on March 16 to find potentially hazardous dishes improperly cooled, food unprotected from potential contamination, ineffective pest control measures, hot and cold holding equipment missing and more, earning the restaurant 19 demerits. SNHD will shut down a restaurant if a re-inspection has some of the same demerits found during the previous inspection.”

BLT Burger had previously been part of another Health District Scandal when the Las Vegas Review Journal incorrectly noted in 2008 that it was getting also bad ratings.

BLT Burger itself ironically as “At this brainchild of Chef Laurent Tourondel, meat and bun take on connoisseur toppings and sides. Oh, and there’s nothing cooler (in temperature and attitude) than a spiked milkshake.” I guess there are a lot of things cooler than the fridges there, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

Kim Kardashian to DJ for Hakkasan Anniversary?

Not happy being known for doing absolutely nothing, Kim Kardashian seems that she’s trying to get into DJ business by making a “special appearance” at Hakkasan for it’s third anniversary celebration.

During the weekend Thursday, April 7 through Sunday, April 10, Hakkasan will host longtime favorites such as Tiësto, Steve Aoki, DVBBS, and of course Mrs. Kardashian West. Not much is said of Kim’s appearance at the nightclub, other than that it will be her “first public appearance of 2016.”

She will be “hosting the event” which could mean anything from stopping by and playing a set to perhaps just throwing up in the bathroom after drinking too much.

We are assuming she’s been paid a lot of money to show up and perhaps press a button.

SLS Closing Part of Failed Casino to Re-Open as W Vegas

0

The SLS Casino in Las Vegas has become sort of a joke among locals, since it opened. The failed casino of attempted mogul Sam Nazarian failed to attract visitors after a less than stellar opening, and was brought to it’s knees when Nazarian was unable to obtain a gambling license because of questionable ties to a felon and reported drug use. However, with the addition of Scott Kreeger as their President and Chief Operating Officer, the Casino seems to be taking steps to slow its fall.

It seems they realized they couldn’t compete with the large casinos, so they have entered into an agreement with Starwood Hotels to give one of the SLS Towers to be redesigned as a new “W” brand boutique hotel.

“SLS Las Vegas, with some 1600 rooms, is a milestone addition to Starwood, growing our total footprint worldwide by nearly half a percent with a single signing,” said Adam Aron, Chief Executive Officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts on an interim basis. “This is a perfect example of what Tribute Portfolio was designed to do—bring the power of Starwood to great independent hotels, while giving our Starwood Preferred Guest® members and global guests more access to sought after destinations around the world. It also allows us to debut our iconic W brand on the world famous Las Vegas Strip, an incomparable stage for the dynamic energy and vibrant scene of W Hotels.”

The remaining towers, as well as all food & beverage and casino-related operations will remain under management of SLS Las Vegas, which has operated the hotel since its redevelopment in 2014.

Starwood has four other properties in the Las Vegas area, belonging to the Westin, Four Points, and Elements brands. Starwood Preferred Guest members also enjoy earn-and-burn privileges at select Caesars Entertainment properties in Las Vegas and elsewhere.

“We have long wanted to increase our Starwood presence in Las Vegas, a much desired destination for our SPG® members, who occupy 50% of our guestrooms on any given night,” said Allison Reid, SVP, North America Development, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. “The signing of SLS Las Vegas not only allows us to expand our footprint and give our members more options on the Strip but also speaks volumes to the power of Starwood’s brands and our industry-leading distribution, loyalty and sales platforms that will contribute to the success of this landmark property.”
