2

Beloved Las Vegas Performer, Kimberly Tripp of Beacher’s Madhouse was found dead on her porch. The body was discovered by Ricky Sells Jr., Tripp’s boyfriend and co-star who plays Mini Kanye West at Beacher’s Madhouse.

The cause of death has not been confirmed. Jeff Beacher, the theater’s founder, reported that Tripp appeared to be in good health on Saturday. She was 32 years old.

Kim you will be forever missed and loved by all. My love and prays goes out to your family and ours. #RipKim you will be missed.”

HeXX Makes Mouths Happy

1

Perhaps the best place for al fresco dining in Las Vegas, it seemed only right to celebrate a sunny March Birthday Brunch at Hexx Kitchen + Bar, and with Chef Matt Piekarski agreeing to temporarily “un-retire” the Carrot Cake Pancakes the experience progressed just the same as that at Christmas with food as fun and well-crafted as ever while the team of a dozen servers circulated the 350+ seat dining room floor.

[supsystic-gallery id=’1′ position=’center’]

No doubt a space with purpose, the jammed-packed dining room a tourist friendly place for 24/7 eating that helps to fuel HeXX Chocolate Bean-to-Bar operation running behind the scenes, it was with reservations circumventing a 45-minute wait at 11am on Saturday that seating was offered in the patio’s corner pocket, the menu seeing some recent updates with some classics undergoing seasonal or, at least structural, change.

Repeatedly refilling Peete’s Coffee, the strong brew always piping hot with sugar and cream eschewed as the morning’s order would require something dark to counteract all the sweets, it was at the recommendation of Manager Ari Stotland that the recently elongated Fruit Plate started things off, and serving a slightly sized-down version compared to the monster made for sharing the quality of produce remains exemplary, pineapples and dragon fruit particularly delicious alongside mini-muffins of warm banana bread.

Slowly plucking individual pieces of fruit while taking in the crowd, everyone from a Hair-of-the-Dog craving group of bridesmaids to a table of three folks aged at least eighty enjoying the sunny 65°F, it was with a grin that Chef Piekarski arrived tableside with two enormous plates of carbohydrates, and as good as fluffy waffle segments beneath a mountain of cream cheese frosting may be they still pale in comparison to the quality of the Carrot-strewn Pancakes, the buttermilk batter enlivened by spices while candied nuts provide an intermittent crunchy reward.

Conveniently offering the full dessets menu all day and night, the HeXX website fails to do justice to Chef Carol Garcia’s recently reinvented array, and although several options featuring Chocolate are, of course, advisable one would be foolish to pass on a more diversified sampling, the Banana Cream Pie rivaling that of Emeril for Best in the City while Creme Brulee presents more like a candy coated Butterscotch Budino, the Ecuadorian Chocolate Bread Pudding smooth and creamy with Coconut Milk in a portion that all but the most gluttonous will definitely want to share.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Marred only by the fact that the Carrot Cake Pancakes require a special request, HeXX remains the very best 24/7 space in a city where such things are not for lack, the food and service far better than they really need to be while a world-class Chocolate program continues to grow in back.

RECOMMENDED: Butterscotch Creme Brulee, Banana Cream Pie, Carrot Cake Pancakes.

AVOID: Expecting a patio seat when walking in during peak hours on weekends.

TIP: Be sure to check out the retail shop for a selection of single-origin HeXX chocolate Ice Creams made in partnership with Atlanta-based High Road.

José Andrés Noodle Shop Goes Limp

More not so good news for the SLS Las Vegas, which has had a string of really bad failures, topped with the closing of part of their hotel. Unfortunately another one of their short-lived restaurants is closing, this time Chef Andre’s Ku Noodle. According to a release from the SLS, they were closed due to a mutual understanding of some sort – which means it wasn’t making money.

Billed as “Asian comfort food for the soul,” the restaurant was considered a casual place with handmade noodle and dumplings. According to food expert Michael Uzmann, the restaurant was “Undoubtedly facing an uphill battle in a city where cheap meats and ramen shops speckle Spring Mountain Road, Ku Noodle presents an upscale option for those willing to invest in quality ingredients, innovation, and presentation.”

No replacement for the restaurant has been announced.

Offstrip T-Bones Chophouse Pleases Everyone

0

Toqued by Chef Mike Deas with input from Red Rock Assistant Executive Chef Joseph Kudrak, formerly from Glutton, T-Bones Chophouse & Lounge is one of those places easily overlooked by Las Vegas visitors as well as locals, a recent dinner on an early Friday evening leaving one to wonder exactly why, and how to get the word out?

More tucked away than Hearthstone, Lucille’s or The Buffet and Grand Café, a nearly 200 seat footprint overlooking the Red Rock pool with high ceilings, fireplaces and plenty of polish, T-Bones Chophouse & Lounge both looks and feels like many On-Strip casino Steakhouses, but taking a few more risks with the menu than several the experience is presented as one also more affordable, the price-point not dissimilar to nearby Andiron, Fleming’s or Morton’s.

Retaining several of its well-mannered Captains from early on, the restaurant’s professional-friendly service style reportedly a focus of the Fertitta family who own Station Casinos and visit often, dinner was served in a Prix-fixe fashion and with Chefs Kudrak as well as Deas present that evening the meal was nothing short of a feast for the senses, a $300 tab for sixteen appetizers, entrees, sides and desserts plus one heck of a cocktail and a bread basket that bests any seen recently on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Acknowledging a friend’s two-hour time limit, tickets to the UNLV Opera requiring departure just before Seven o’clock, it was at a large semi-circular booth that the meal got started and with greetings from GM Christopher Jurchenkoit was not long before service was underway, the opening trio seeing lightly battered shrimp given a Chinatown treatment while steakhouse staples of French Onion Soup and Crabcakes were as good as any in the city, the former faintly sweet with plenty of bubbling cheese while the “cake” was almost pure crab with bright aromatics of paprika, onion and cayenne in the binder.

A bit off-put by the noise emanating from the bar, a combination of March Madness revelry, Friday Happy Hour and music piped in from the Gaming Floor, round two followed quickly and although fresh-cut potatoes could have been more crispy, “Perfect Poutine” was quite a bargain at just $10 when taking into account all the confit, cheese and skin, the Steakhouse Salad equally well constructed as chopped Romaine blended nicely with Avocado, Bacon and Gorgonzola beneath creamy French Dressing.

Not even 1/3 finished at this point, course three a six-piece exposition of two entrees and four sides, gone are the days of piddly portions at CUT or PRIME as Au Gratin Potatoes, Hashbrowns, Mushrooms and Creamed Corn are all built for sharing, as too is the two-piece Fried Chicken with Sage Gravy while the Beef selections range from American Wagyu to New York Prime from Niman Ranch, the latter in our case served Medium with a topping of fresh Lobster, Asparagus and Béarnaise.

Bathed by the setting sun with blinds offering only modest relief as a result of floor-to-ceiling windows that give the room part of its grand appeal, dessert was taken to the patio as music turned live in the Lounge and although admittedly already quite sated none of the five options proved less than worth the temptation, the Carrot Cake and Soufflé both straight forward classics alongside Cheesecake that trends far lighter than most followed by indulgent blueberry donuts and a frozen parfait plus Sticky Toffee Pudding that falls just short of Gordon Ramsay’s for best in The Valley.

FOUR STARS: Easily overlooked in a city where Steakhouses rule the day, T-Bones Chophouse & Lounge is a great spot for those inhabiting Summerlin to grab a Cocktail or snacks at Happy Hour and an even better one for al fresco patio dining, the price point more favorable than spots on The Strip while the menu outpaces other places nearby in terms of both creativity and quality of sourcing.

RECOMMENDED: Bread Basket, French Onion Soup, Tempura Shrimp, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Crimini Mushrooms, Cheesecake, Ricotta Beignets.

AVOID: Hash Browns and Carrot Cake were both fine, while better can be found elsewhere. As mentioned, French Fries could have used a bit more time in the fryer to withstand the gravy.

TIP: Happy Hour 4-7pm daily, dinner starts at 5:oopm. MyVegas users can play to win “Spend 60, Get 30 off” certificates.

Elvis Sues Westgate for Return of Items

0

Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc is seeking to retrieve items including stage outfits, jewellery and the star’s high school yearbook.

It says the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino is holding the items “hostage” as part of a dispute with the operators of an Elvis exhibition.

The Graceland Presents Elvis attraction closed abruptly earlier this month.

Billed as the largest exhibition of Elvis memorabilia outside his Graceland home and museum, the attraction opened last April to great fanfare.

But the doors closed at the beginning of March, with The Westgate claiming the show’s operators, Exhibit A Circle LLC, had defaulted on their 10-year lease.

Exhibit A claimed the Westgate violated the contract first, but declined to elaborate. Elvis’s estate responded by filing legal papers filed in Clark County District Court. It claimed it had been denied access to a security camera that allowed it to monitor its items, and asked the court to order that the memorabilia be returned.

Elvis Presley Enterprises declined to comment further on the legal action, but previously said Westgate aggressively seized the valuables without a legitimate legal basis.

Westgate’s chief operating officer Mark Waltrip declined to discuss the case.

The dispute centres on the same casino where Elvis performed several hundred shows, in the days when it was known as the Las Vegas Hilton and The International.

The 28,000-square-foot exhibition featured the $1 million-a-year contract Elvis signed on a tablecloth, agreeing to perform at the casino; and the single-button black suit he wore for his first performances there.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Elvis & Nixon, a comedy about the 1970 meeting between the rock star and the US president, will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York next month.

Liza Johnson’s film, backed by Amazon Studios, stars Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley and Kevin Spacey as Richard Nixon.

With so much activity at the center of the Strip, we are excited to bring our guests these planned room enhancements.”

In the past five years, Caesars Entertainment has made material investments in Las Vegas, including the development of The LINQ Promenade and the High Roller, The Cromwell, the only standalone boutique hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, the world’s first Nobu Hotel, the 642-room Octavius Tower including six luxury villas, the re-creation of the state-of the-art AXIS Theaterwhich is home to Britney Spears, along with the opening of Giada, the only restaurant of the famed Chef Giada De Laurentiis.
