Johnny Church Remakes Aureole in his Own Image: Diverse, Unique and Amazing

My Girlfriend, Chef Church and I

For the last two years or so, the future of Aureole Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Resort was up in the air, not unlike their famous  lady “angels” of wine who are perilously shot into the air on a wire to grab your strip-priced Chateau Whateva. They had planned an entirely new vision to place as early as 2015. They had even hired a new GM and a new chef to help with the changes, and conversations with their former GM lead me to believe the redesign and new fare would be ready as early as late 2015. However, after a year, no work was done on the place, and the GM was fired, and the Chef left to new and better pastures.

Conversations with their PR team were short, and not very sweet: they took offensive to any questions about the future of the restaurant, and blatantly didn’t want to talk about it. It was clear to anyone in the industry that Aureole was lost and that one of the most famous spots in Las Vegas was getting close to being shuttered. The menu had barely changed and anything added seemed to be an afterthought. The reviews of the restaurant fared equally bad.

Chef Charlie Palmer must have been paying attention, because as soon as the media started to take notice of the stale old décor and the equally blasé menu, he shut down the restaurant, and hired Chef John “Johnny” Church. Church is a much beloved local Las Vegas Chef who had cut his teeth at some of Vegas’ favorite restaurants including Andre’s, RM Seafood and Downtown’s MTO Café. I was fortunate enough to have been invited by the Chef himself to tour the menu, and wasn’t disappointed with anything served.

Chef Church working hard in the Kitchen

The menu is divided into foundations of Root, Surf and Ranch, with lighter fare and pairing to more robust flavors that complement their huge selection of wine. The purpose of the menu is obvious: to introduce different flavors of progressive American cuisine to tourists and have them share with the entire table.

You’ll immediately recognize most of the dishes, as they are all classics with a twist. There’s beet salad with goat cheese, but its been transformed into a delicious Goat Cheese Souffle with Onion Soil. Similarly, ever other dish is recognizable as being inspired by famous dishes, many from Charlie Palmer himself, but with their own twist and accent that is specifically Chef Church. The Kona Kampachi Crudo screamed commonality to me on the menu, but when it came out, it wasn’t just perfectly plated but each taste was unique with the mix of pickled cauliflower and citrus crèma.

This is a amazing menu for what Vegas is made for: Tourists trying to learn about new food, and experience something new and delightful. It’s possible that the more “experienced” reviewer will not appreciate the schizophrenic division of dishes, that play off each other while preserving its diverse tastes. However, I loved it, and despite being sometimes one of the most critical diners, I looked forward to each dish coming out of the kitchen, with a short explanation from Chef Church.

Let’s make this clear: Aureole is once again a “must visit” for anyone coming to Vegas, and there is one main reason: Chef Johnny Church.

0

Veteran Food Reporter Al Mancini of the LVRJ stopped in at Meráki Greek Grill this week, and seems to have LOVED it! Meraki is a partnership between Nikos Georgousis, who ran the kitchen of The Cosmopolitan’s Estiatorio Milos, and Jerry Goumroian, who has cooked at Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare, Restaurant Guy Savoy, RM Seafood and off-Strip venues The Fat Greek and The Great Greek.

Robot Bartenders Will Get You Drunk in Las Vegas this Summer

0

If Rino Armeni has his way, human bartenders will be a thing of the past, as he plans to open this summer the “First Robot Bar in the World’ where robots will make all your drinks. To be opened at the in the Miracle Mile shopping complex, in Planet Hollywood, this could be one of the most interesting bars ever.

Not much has been posted about the project from Armeni, except that he is looking to hire staff for the End of June, including a “female General Manager,” which one can assume means a female human and not a robot.

The Las Vegas Review Journal reported that despite calling itself, the “First Robot Bar in the World,” there is actually a robot bar on the Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas.

What does this mean for the bar industry in Las Vegas? How will you be able to talk to a robot about your problems, sorrows, and flirt with them? No idea.

Trump Admin Declares War on Marijuana in Las Vegas

0

Leaving no doubt that the Trump Administration is not pro-pot at all: Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary implied today that Trump has ordered Jeff Sessions, the Attorney General of the US Department of Justice to shut down the Marijuana industry in Nevada.

Spicer suggested that the country has enough on its plate with the “opioid crisis,” and that “the last thing” we should be doing is encouraging recreational cannabis use.

“I believe you are going to see greater enforcement” of federal marijuana laws in states that have legalized the drug for recreational use, Spicer said.

“The Department of Justice will be further looking into this,” he said.

Lo-Lo’s Chicken N Waffles Shut Down by Vegas Health Police

0

One of the most famous southern fried chicken and waffle restaurants in the United States, Lo-Lo’s is in huge trouble with the Po-Po.  The restaurant which calls itself the “best Chicken and Waffles Combination” and features items like Uncle Brotha’s Shrimp & Grits, Aunt Hattie’s Salmon Croquettes, Collard Greens, Fried Green Tomatoes was shut down this past week, for among other things, having employees that didn’t wash their hands after going poo-poo.

Oh, and it gets worse. The Southern Nevada Health District found spoiled food in the kitchen, meaning your waffle might have come with a little bit of extra slime than normal.

The reviews on Yelp don’t actually show they are that appetizing, despite a good reputation:

“The waffles were not hot, the chicken was hard. One of our guest had grits, the grits were completely solid!”

“Once we ordered and received food the chicken was bland and the waffle was soggy mush. Not sure what all the hulabaloo was about but it definitely bot high on my list. Maybe it would be better to come at a slower time when perhaps there will be better quality.”

As of today they had re-opened, and were serving as normal according to a representative.

Teen Star Sean Kingston Beat Up by Rapper Migos in Las Vegas

0

One time teen heart throb Sean Kingston  and Bad And Bougie rappers Migos allegedly broke out at an event in Las Vegas.

According to LVMPD a gun shot was fired in an effort to break up the fight, which was reportedly caused by an argument involving Soulja Boy.

Kingston, 27, and Migos, which consists of members Quavo, Offset and Takeoff, attended an event at the Sands Expo and Convention Center on 21 February. According to TMZ, the musicians got into an altercation late in the afternoon, allegedly prompting a member of Kingston’s entourage to fire a single shot.

Nobody was hurt by the gunfire and Migos and Kingston reportedly left the scene before police arrived. The rap collective are alleged to have kicked and stomped Kingston in the brawl. However, when Kingston was later pulled over by police officers at a traffic stop, the Beautiful Girls singer was said to have been “co-operative”, but refused to divulge names of others involved in the fight, saying “I don’t wanna be a snitch.”

The person who fired the gunshot was arrested at the scene and handed over to the Las Vegas Police Department, along with another person.

Zydeco Po-Boys to Close, Can Nothing can Survive Downtown But Cockroaches?

0

Happier Times
Happier Times

It’s pretty clear that almost no one can survive having a decent restaurant downtown, especially on Carson Street. Downtown’s Cajun inspired eatery Zydeco Po-Boys announced that they hadn’t the funds to continue operating at the space.

It’s with a heavy heart that I announce Zydeco Po-Boys will be closing its doors on March 3rd. On behalf of my staff and I, we wish to thank Tony and the staff of Downtown Project for the opportunity to be part of the downtown revitalization. We wish to thank all of our loyal supporters who came out over the last year and a half to dine with us. It has been a pleasure to share my Cajun heritage and cooking with Y’all. We wish the continued success of our friends and downtown neighbors and to all of the projects efforts.

Thank You, Brandon Trahan

While Carson Street Kitchen has been doing pretty well, it seems to be an exception in that specific neighborhood – and many restaurant owners have pointed out that despite the revitalization of the area, it’s still known to be where crack addicts hang out, and more importantly, a great place to get mugged.

LVRJ’s Al Mancini quoted former owner of Glutton which closed down recently, saying “Unfortunately, people don’t want to be eating inside a restaurant while watching someone dig in the trash directly outside the window.”

John Curtas, of EatingLV told us one of the reasons nothing can work on that block is “because not enough people live there, and there are not enough foodies in town willing to travel there…when the Claimjumper is right next door with free parking!”

Lisa Tabor wrote in response to the closing, “That is a shame. I will come see you before you close. You should think about a location in Summerlin. I would have been there more often but it was just not convenient for me. I will try to come see you before you close. Lafayette Louisiana living in Vegas!”
