Three Horrible Las Vegas Real Estate Brokers

1

I’m not selling my house. My house has been off the market for quite a while now, and I’ve decided that because of the current real estate upswing especially in my area. Add the fact they sold the last lot in my community, means that I want to sit on the house a little bit longer. I’ve already made at least $250k in value in two years, and expect it to go up at least another $100k before the next year is over. Then I have a decision to make. However, despite this, I’ve had several horrible experiences with Real Estate “professionals” that made me wonder about the professionalism of real estate brokers in Las Vegas.

Here’s my worst experiences in the last few months.
Mind you again, my house is not for sale, and these are all people cold calling and showing up unannounced.

1) The gentleman “realtor of the year” who called my 80-year parents, over and over asking about the house. After I contacted him, mainly to find about his persistence, he added me on Facebook. Instead of being polite, and talking about the house, he proceeded to write pro-Donald Trump posts, attack my personal friends as being “really &%$ing stupid,” among other things. When I called his boss at Berkshire Hathaway, he proceeded to message me on a Facebook page and threaten me. His CEO has assured me since he will leave me alone.

2) The guy who left a business card and rang the doorbell almost twice a day. Seriously. This guy kept on showing up in my private community, almost every single day, twice a day and left a business card lodged in the gate to my house. He would ring the doorbell, put the card in, and then seemingly disappear to ring another doorbell. Eventually he stopped ringing the doorbell after two weeks. I was considering putting an electrical shock device in the doorbell, but envisioned accidently electrocuting a girl scout.

3) The Realtor who rang the doorbell at 8pm, waking my recovering sick 6 year old. Despite not answering the door, he decided to ring it again. And again. So I went on the front balcony, thinking I might throw a computer or something at him, only to see a pudgy hispanic fellow and a good looking younger couple with a wife showing her midriff and very large fake breasts. They apologized, and he proceeding to tell me that the couple wanted to buy the house immediately, right now. I gave them my email, to be told that the couple was ready to purchase the house ASAP, had cash and wanted to make the offer now as they were moving. When I asked about an earnest deposit, it became very clear he was bullshitting me, because they wanted to see the house before making an offer and only wanted to put down $5k. Sorry Mr. J-s, not going to buy it.

Being aggressive, trying to find leads, being a good realtor and making money isn’t a bad thing. I applaud people who make a phone call, send an email or letter to people about their house.

Please help your clients find deals, help them buy a great home, sell a home and be professional. However, there is a line that is not only unethical, violates real estate rules and regulations, but is also illegal. Going into a private community with a no-trespassing signs, ringing doorbells is extremely unethical and illegal. It’s enough that a complaint about this to the police could result in having your license stripped, or at least have you very publicly exposed by a blogger or journalist who writes your name next time.

Le Pho Downtown Las Vegas Raises the Bowl on Pho

0

I eat a lot of Pho. While some people do fast-food when they are in a hurry, I tend to find myself a local Pho place, sit down and enjoy what could be considered Vietnamese fast food.  For those who aren’t in the know about the Pho, Pho is a Vietnamese street food whose actual origins aren’t that well known, even in Vietnam. Regardless, it’s considered by many to be almost the national food of Vietnam and for decades Vietnamese emigrants from all over the world set up Pho shops. More recently though it has become very popular amongst non-Vietnamese foodies, hipsters and club goers.

In Las Vegas, Pho is often synonymous with late night dinners by industry locals before work. Places like Pho Kim Long, with its infamous pornographic name, on Spring Mountain often are packed with people attempting to have a quick bite before work, or the next day after a serious hangover.

Still, almost all the places, as nice as they can get, are pretty much the same. While there are some that are better, it’s still pretty much a street food and the quality of meat and other ingredients is generally not that good. When eating Pho it’s sort of sometimes better not to know what exactly is in it, especially if you aren’t familiar with the word “tripe.”

Enter Le Pho, the culinary brainchild of Chef Dan Coughlin and Chef Khai Vu. Both Chefs have relatively successful well-known local restaurants, so it was expected the food would be better than the average Pho place.

However, I had no idea how much better it would be.

I didn’t want to give a full review of the place, partially because there will be journalists and reviewer who will do a much better job that I could ever.

I wanted to just focus on the Pho, and the Pho in particular that I had: the Oxtail Pho.

As soon as it arrived at the table, I knew I was in for a treat. The smell was an intense deep meaty smell, with just enough steam rising from the broth to let me be able to inhale and immediately enjoy. The first taste of the broth was even better, with the unique deep flavor I’ve never had before with Pho. I recognized the flavors but they were more intense, more of them, fresher, better.

It seemed to me that there had to be some secret to the taste. Curious that it might be MSG or some sort of flavor enhancer to give it that deep umami taste, I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager “Cookie.” While she didn’t seem to be an expert in Pho herself, and admits she learned a lot from the Chef, she was able to explain to me exactly what their process is in making the Pho.

According to her, they don’t use MSG in their Pho because they wanted to make a better product, where customers could taste more of the ingredients. Instead of “cheating” as she called it, with MSG, they take a more expensive route that requires them to put all the different meats in a pot, and simmer it slowly for over 6 hours with ginger, onions, salt and pepper. Even the bones are put into the soup so that the marrow essence will transfer its flavor.

While that may not seem like a huge step, a lot of restaurants do opt to use MSG. A quick call around town to the Pho restaurants ended up with at least half a dozen admitting they use MSG, don’t label that there is MSG in their products, and in a few cases, have no idea what they put in their Pho. While I can’t guarantee that Le Pho is that much better than other places because they don’t use MSG, I can tell you that Le Pho is indeed, that much better – and that’s all you need to know.

That’s because it’s Phobulous…

Ok, that sounded a lot better in my head.

LA Kings to Come to Vegas

0

There’s been a lot of news lately about different sports teams coming to Vegas. Currently the Oakland Raiders have been talking about perhaps becoming the Las Vegas Raiders, and in the past year or so, people have been serious about bringing Soccer and Hockey Teams to Vegas. However, Vegas might get what it wants: the Los Angeles Kings are coming to Las Vegas!

The Los Angeles Kings will host its annual “Frozen Fury” exhibition series in the 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in October.

The Kings will play the Dallas Stars on Oct. 7 and the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 8.

“We’re thrilled to incorporate this trip to Las Vegas into our preseason schedule,” Stars President, CEO and alternate governor Jim Lites said in a release. “The new T-Mobile Arena is a beautiful facility and we’re proud to take part in one of the first sporting events there.”

“We are excited to be featured in one of the very first sporting events at the new T-Mobile Arena and we look forward to creating new Frozen Fury memories there,” Kings president Luc Robitaille said. “The atmosphere at ‘Frozen Fury’ is always one of the highlights of our exhibition game schedule and we believe we can take this to a ‘next level’ in this new environment.

“Our fans will be excited that there will be two games this season, our 50th anniversary, and we know they – along with our players – are going to love this new state-of-the-art arena.”

The Wallstreet Journal Notes:

Major sports leagues have long steered clear of Las Vegas to avoid association with gamblers. The stigma, however, has faded as area’s economy has grown beyond gambling. Nongaming draws such as hotels, high-end dining, trendy nightclubs and spas generated 58.4% of revenue in Clark County last year, while gambling generated 41.6% of revenues, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, owned by AEG, began staging preseason games in Las Vegas nearly two decades ago, while the National Basketball Association hosted its All-Star Game there for the first time in 2007.

LVRJ: Pirates Are Raiding Vegas Booty

0

Jane Ann Morrison of the Las Vegas Review Journal doesn’t really like pirates, or least pirates in Vegas. She’s written a pretty upset column that heavily criticizes the PirateFest as being a drain on tax payers since they’ve asked for three years for a cultural event waiver to use Las Vegas City Land. According to Ms. Morrison, that comes to a Grand Total of $31,000 or so over the last three years that they aren’t having to pay, and she isn’t happy about that and wants to raid their treasure chest and get some serious booty.

While I understand her concern that a For-Profit company is not being charged for use of the City Land, her desire to raid the PirateFest seems a little bit overboard considering the alternative rght now.

The City of Las Vegas, as many locals know, but very few tourists do, isn’t most of the Las Vegas as we know it. It’s not the Strip, which most people think of Las Vegas, but instead Downtown and then mainly seemingly random residential land over the valley. Downtown, while it has a new resurgence of restaurants and life, is still considered for many a financial loss for investments.

Thanks to Zappos for example, much of the downtown has been re-energized and made family friendly.

However, it’s not close to being done as most know. Just feet away from the Container Park (which is amazing) still hangs homeless people and just a block away is a known drug and hooker den.

These establishments will slowly be cut from the neighborhood over time. Still, despite all the work, some people don’t see Downtown and the “City of Las Vegas” as a safe place to hold festivals without a lot of work and money.

Until there is a HUGE demand of using the downtown space on a weekly basis we still need to give incentivizes to use that space. With tons of empty land around the Valley, places like Downtown Summerlin popping up with public spaces, there are much cheaper alternatives for almost every place to have a festival elsewhere. If the City of Las Vegas refused to give a permit, they could go even a mile way and rent a parking lot for a lot cheaper, and probably still get the same amount of people. Pirates don’t need parks.

I get it, Ms. Morrison probably isn’t a huge pirate fan, nor a big lover of booty. However, I invite her to come downtown to Pirate Fest and say “Arrrrggghhh!!”

Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons Parties with Convicted Pimp and Serial Assaulter of Women

0

Turns out that Dan Reynolds of the band Imagine Dragons may have a secret he’s not looking to be spread on the internet.  A photo of him with convicted Pimp Arman Izadi, who had been arrested for and convicted for series of violent attacks on women in Las Vegas has showed up on the internet. According to Izadi, he was partying with Reynolds in Vegas and providing him services. What those services are, we are going to assume is free drinks, but considering Izadi’s background and conviction, we have to wonder why he is hanging out with this scumbag.

Additionally, why aren’t the clubs banning a convicted pimp who was abusing women by putting out cigarettes on their body and waterboarding them? Clubs that continue to cater to criminals that are a danger to their clients should take note and issue a ban on Mr. Izadi. Additionally, clubs internationally need to have this crook’s photo and make sure he is immediately arrested.

What makes this guy Arman Izadi so dangerous is that he is now traveling around the world claiming to be a famous photographer, a famous modeling scout, a famous you name it. He’s advertised in several places that he is a photographer and looking for models victims.

BLT Burger Permanently Shut Down Weeks After Health Scare

0

It’s time to say goodbye to BLT Burger in the Mirage. After opening in 2008 to much fanfare as part of the Bistro Laurent Tourondel Empire, it became a fixture on the Las Vegas Strip for the past 8 years. Known for its oversized burger combinations that included burgers made with Kobe and Lamb, drinks that included a Spiked Espresso Milkshake, it was a place that many people went to at all hours of the night.

BLT Burger was one of the first restaurants in Las Vegas to bring the “gourmet” burger into the Spotlight. Laurent Tourondel, the owner and namesake, was named in 1998 as one of the best new Chefs in America while cooking at the Mirage’s Palace Court Restaurant. After opening BLT Steaks and Primes in New York and LA, he made his way back to Las Vegas to open BLT Burger.

The 198-seat BLT Burger was considered a “hip and casual setting” that reflected both the natural “Nevada landscape and the glamour of Las Vegas with end-grain wood, walnut and yellow-glazed lava stone, accented with red glazed brick, golden furniture upholstery and dramatic lighting.”

Unfortunately its farewell wasn’t marked without controversy as it was shut down just weeks ago by the Health Police for violating several food safety regulations.

Don’t worry however, a burger joint is to open almost immediately right after in the same exact place. Owned and run by the Mirage, “LVB Burger” (which represents Las Vegas Boulevard Burger) will be very similar to the previous restaurant, minus hopefully the health violations.

Video: Goodbye Monte Carlo, Welcome Park Place?

0

Robin Leach scored an exclusive interview on his cell phone yesterday (no mention if he was using an iPhone or Android for his tech) with Jim Murren, the current CEO of MGM resorts, where he revealed that Monte Carlo is indeed having a name change. This isn’t exactly a secret, as it’s been reported in numerous blogs and even Leach has hinted that he knows MGM’s secret.

The Monte Carlo will most likely be renamed Park Place, to go along with the name of the “The Park” which opened yesterday to a small celebration.

When asked if this was a commitment to moving away from gaming, and focusing more and more on an experience, MGM’s CEO responded:

I think that all of us here — MGM, Wynn, Venetian, Caesars — recognize that we are part of an increasingly smaller world. A very global world with more and more international customers is coming here.

A combination of their tastes, their expectations to visit a global city and the Millennials that visit us today who are very different consumers of entertainment than the entertainment consumers of 10 years ago means that you have to evolve.

Otherwise, you’re just moving backward and becoming less relevant. I’ve found that our best gaming customers have been really, really excited because our new thinking extends their length of stay.

They’re staying a half-day more, maybe another day more. They’re bringing more family or friends. There are more things to do.

Murren had previously noted in other interviews that the “Monte Carlo” brand didn’t resonate with customers. It’s expected that the new “Park Place” will be a more boutique feel, and will go along nicely with the upscale The Park experience.

Chef Marty Lopez Brings Great Steak to Hard Rock Las Vegas

Located in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, directly down the hall from the Paradise Garage and across the way from John Varvatos, 35 Steaks + Martinis is a restaurant I had walked by dozens of times without giving much thought until a well-respected local Chef and a friend began to speak fondly of it, the former actually a past employee and graciously agreeing to sit down with me for a meal.

Toqued by Marty Red DeLeon Lopez, with Michael Van Staden no less important to the kitchen while General Manager Mario Gonzalez runs a stylish room that stretches from lounge to the edge of the Hard Rock Pool, those entering 35 Steaks + Martinis are first greeted by the smiling faces of gorgeous hostesses and whether the choice is made for a full dinner or merely bar bites the menu offers no lack of options, a few ‘signatures’ and steakhouse staples joined by items as intriguing as they are well-crafted.

Obviously dining with a friend of the house, paired wines offered by Mr. Gonzalez including some top tier bottles served via Coravin, it was at the transition of Fall/Winter to Spring that our tasting took place and as the first to see several of the plates there is no doubt that Hard Rock honchos have given Marty and Michael a green light to compete with the best of the Strip’s Steakhouses, the amuse served under a glass dome delivering a smoky dry ice show as thin slices of scallop sang amidst a salad of citrus with just a touch of heat and black truffle.

Never purporting to be a wine snob, but happy to say that each pairing was exquisite with a special nod to the funky White Burgundy, 2009 Dolce and 2012 Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the tasting officially began with buttery Brioche Monkey Bread before launching into a Beet Salad that avoided ennui by enlivening Tri-colored Beets with Banyuls and crunchy Kataifi Wrapped Goat Cheese, the follow-up of Charred Octopus and Black Angus Filet Carpaccio looking a lot like that served at Artisanal Foods Café a few weeks prior but adding spice with a porky Pine Nut Tapenade while reduced Sherry helped invigorate the cephalopod’s more subtle taste.

Special requesting Five Onion Soup Gratine, the brine of bacon mixing with rich beef stock in a non-traditional broth that came across sweeter than most and therefore well suited to my tastes, the official menu resumed with slotted porcelain filled by “Lobster Escargot” where shell stock and diced claws wer used to fortify Burgundy Snails bathed in garlic butter, nearly every drop soaked up with a side of yeasty Parker House Rolls.

Cleansing the palate with a fragrant sorbet that thankfully found most of its flavor in Strawberries rather than the cloying sweetness of Passion Fruit, it was here that Lopez and Van Staden’s heavier plates would make their appearance, Foie Gras a L’Orange an idea ironically seen at Beverly Hills’ Avec Nous just one week prior but here in a far larger portion – and several degrees better – not only in terms of texture but also as relates to accoutrements, the team essentially reading my mind with bread pudding seared into French Toast surrounded by a crunchy Almond crust bathed in bittersweet Marmalade.

Sipping the Dolce slowly as possible, thoughts of asking for more restrained by recalling a thirty minute drive back home, entrees were introduced via 4-Way Colorado Lamb Mixed Grill, a combination of T-Bone, Rack and Belly plus housemade Merguez Sausage given an African accent via Vadouvan while the subsequent Australian Wagyu was almost as well marbled as its Japanese counterpart yet more capable of standing up to some grilling, a good crust found on the exterior while the inside was just past rare.

Impressed by sides, the Black Truffle Potatoes and Foie Gras enriched Mushrooms particularly impressive as part of a wooden service tray newly introduced to show off Marty and Michael’s premium Steaks, it was with introductions to the property dining director and Pastry Chef Mickey Harden that introductions were made, the later sending out four new options to be paired with 40-Year Tawny Port – the fact that he is also responsible for much of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s baking really no surprise as everything from the “Sticky Pig” to a Cookie Plate was across-the-board excellent, those looking for something light strongly encouraged to check out the Lemon Meringue Pot du Crème that arrives with a delicious slice of Almond cake.

[supsystic-gallery id=’19’ position=’center’]

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Perhaps the most under regarded Steakhouse in Las Vegas, the formerly red hot Hard Rock having predictably cooled with age, 35 Steaks + Martinis is nothing short of a dining destination for those willing to venture off-strip, the slightly lower prices not to be mistaken as a drop-off in quality but rather a reason to order more with assurance that there will be just as much quality and creativity on the plate.

RECOMMENDED: Lobster Escargot, Foie Gras a L’Orange, Mushroom Casserole, Sticky Pig, Lemon Meringue.

AVOID: Seating in the lounge, or even the front half of the room, trends quite loud as a result of bar noise and live music. If one were to offer a critique of the food, Merguez Sausage on the Lamb Mixed Grill was a bit dry while the Onion Soup is unlikely to be embraced by purists.

TIP: Open from 5p until as late as Midnight with live Music in the Lounge intermittently, those looking for something light pre-show or prior to a club are encouraged to check out the bar menu where several serious deals can be found.

WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.

Donald Trump Loses Vegas Labor Fight

0

Presidential Candidate Donald Trump isn’t terribly happy with his poll numbers dropping as fast as a Vegas hooker’s panties. However, Hotel Owner Donald Trump is even unhappier today. Even though Trump fought tooth and nail to prevent his workers from receiving fair wages, and tried every single dirty trick in the book to prevent them from unionizing, he lost.

The National Labor Relations Board has certified the workers of the Trump International Hotel as a union, meaning that now the workers of Trump’s Vegas hotel can now demand a contract, and protection from being fired.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 have fought to unionize the Trump Las Vegas hotel. Hotel workers voted to unionize Dec. 7, but management has refused to recognize the vote despite federal pressure. Even now with the National Labor Relations Board certifying the union, Trump has promised to fight them with a legal battle — making sure they won’t be able to ask for fair wages until that battle is done.

However, many workers expressed to the media that they were being pressured by Trump staff to vote against their best interest. Some even reported that they were threatened with being fired if they voted for unionization, something that if correct is both unethical and illegal.

Housekeeper Marisela Olvera said:

They pressured us a lot. They told us the union only wants our money, that if we supported the union we’d lose our jobs, that the company would put our names on a blacklist and no other hotels in Las Vegas would hire us. They told us to think of what our children would do if we were out of work. Everyone was very stressed. People were afraid. But bendito sea Diós, we still won, even with all that pressure.”

According to Vegas Inc, Trump has been playing extremely dirty and labor complaint was filed for their potentially illegal action.

Specifically, the complaint alleges that a hotel labor consultant told employees last year that the Culinary would not help them and said “it would be futile for them to select the union as their bargaining representative.” The consultant also guaranteed “job opportunities to transfer to different positions” if workers stopped supporting the union, according to the complaint.

The complaint says those alleged actions mean the hotel “has been interfering with, restraining and coercing” workers exercising rights guaranteed by law.

Furthermore, the labor board’s complaint says the hotel terminated a certain employee and did not transfer another one to a full-time server job because they “formed, joined and assisted the union and engaged in concerted activities.”

In carrying out those alleged actions, the hotel “has been discriminating in regard to the hire or tenure or terms or conditions of employment” of workers and has unlawfully discouraged membership in a labor organization, the complaint says.
