Las Vegas Has Best Chinatown Restaurants in US

1

Las Vegas doesn’t just have a big Chinatown, but it has a large, three mile long, 140 restaurant big Chinatown that much of the United States doesn’t even know about. Yet it’s arguable not only one of the biggest, but the best Chinatowns you’ve ever been to. While there are a few attempts to do cookie cutter Cantonese style copycats from New York and San Francisco, there are dozens of innovative and interesting restaurants popping up investing in creating a new budding local cuisine that uniquely Asian Influencers and uniquely Las Vegas.

Yes, it’s a misnomer to call it “Chinatown.” While the Chinese influence definitely dominates the area, it’s where both traditional and trendy Asian establishments of all kinds are popping up. Here are just some of the restaurants that make Las Vegas’ Chinatown not only the Best Chinatown, but one of the best foodie locations in the United States by itself:

Whole Main Lobster Pho
Whole Main Lobster Pho

District One Kitchen and Bar
3400 S Jones Blvd #8, Las Vegas, NV 89146

While you might think that the name of this restaurant, District One,  might be an homage to the Hunger Games, it’s actually referring to this award winning contemporary Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of China Town. Known for its Lobster Pho, which contains a whole Maine lobster in Pho soup received praise in national food blogs, this restaurant became the epitome of what Vietnamese food can be when crafted with the best ingredients. The LVRJ recommends the “authentic Vietnamese starter was the spring rolls ($5.99), sometimes called fresh or summer rolls. You know the type: a rice-flour wrapper is folded around a filling generally of pork and lots of vegetables, cilantro and basil and fine rice noodles, with a couple of shrimp wrapped in the translucent paper. All of those elements were present here (the shrimp particularly large and plump), but centered in each roll was a cigar shape that tasted like a rolled and fried wonton wrapper, a welcome bit of crunch in rolls whose only crunchy texture usually comes from the shrimp. On the side was the customary peanut-imbued sauce, this one better than most, and a spicy aioli that was a refreshing change.”

Niu Gu
3400 S Jones Blvd #16, Las Vegas, NV 89146

Joe Muscaglione and Jimmy Li have partnered up here to create an innovative new restaurant that John Curtas said was “… an experiment of sorts. In the few months it has been open, it has gone from a simple noodle parlor, with a limited menu of Chinese soups and starches, to a full service restaurant serving everything from the formal farm-to-cup Chinese tea service to the best, freshest friggin’ fish we’ve ever had in Chinatown.” Al Mancini of Vegas Seven said of the choices was “types of soup, appetizers of dumplings and steamed oysters, and a nice selection of entrées. Vegetarians will be happy to see some fairly intriguing meatless dishes such as sautéed king oyster mushrooms with XO sauce and Chinese yam stirfry with black fungus. And with the exception of the seafood specials and some diver scallops, nothing on the menu costs more than $18, with plenty of options set below 10 bucks.” Read Michael Uzmann’s review of Niu Gu

Skewers of Raku
Skewers of Raku

Raku
5030 W Spring Mountain Rd #2, Las Vegas, NV 89146
Raku in 2012 and 2013 went from a local favorite to international “must see” sensation thanks to Anthony Bourdain, New York Times and Bon Appetite visiting the place. As early as 2009, even Huffington Post called it one of the “Pearly Gates” in “Foodie Heaven.” Frommers claimed it was one of the “most interesting, unique and purely divine restaurants in all of Las Vegas.”  It’s that good, which is why he opened a restaurant in West Hollywood this year. The Las Vegas sun says of Raku that the “menu has about 75 dishes, and there are specials written in English on a small blackboard by the counter. Unlike many Japanese restaurants in, say, Los Angeles or San Francisco, this menu doesn’t hide any of the overly ethnic fare in Japanese script.”

IMG_9829Joyful House Chinese Cuisine
4601 Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89146
Voted many times the “Best Chinese Restaurant” by several magazines and local diners, it’s been all over the place lately after being featured on the Food Network and voted one of the best Chinese Restaurants in the US by CNN. Traditional Hong Kong cuisine is what they do here from the best wontons to simple chow mein. The Daily Meal called it the best Chinese Take Out in the United States. Imperial Pekin Duck is a classic and something you must try. One Yelper said of it, that “Everything is brought to the table and set on a revolving tray so everyone can dig in and eat. Among the dishes we shared was Mongolian Beef, by far the best I have ever eaten. The servers are constantly at your table attending to every need. Prices are reasonable. If you want real Chinese food, go a bit out of the way and eat at Joyful House. You will not be disappointed.”

Wooohooo! Korean BBQ!
Wooohooo! Korean BBQ!

Honey Pig Korean BBQ
4725 Spring Mountain Rd # K, Las Vegas, NV 89102
John Curtas said of Honey Pig, that for “thirty dollars gets you a heap o’ kim chee, sprouts, pork bellies and little, pink, round, sucker-laden octopi just waiting to be pan fried into a meal for two (that could easily feed four). Most of the menu items are set meals with all of the ingredients listed that will be brought to your table. The staff is quite helpful (if a bit brusque – an Asian thing that), and you’ll probably be the only round eye in the place, but that’s half the fun!” The Las Vegas Sun says of Honey Pig that “Meals are cooked on a giant metal brazier, called panchan, by a hard-working waitress, who also has her hands full with the side dishes. You’ll first order one of the meats, such as pork belly or short ribs of beef, and then await the side dishes, which include rectangles of marinated bean curd, yellow bean sprouts and about five other choices, including the notorious kim chee.”

Spicy Fish Cake
Spicy Fish Cake

Chada Street
3839 Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89102
Brock Radke of Las Vegas Weekly said that he “couldn’t wait” for this restaurant to open, saying the chicken meatball was “beyond addictive” and that all that “all levels of culinary curiosity will be consistently rewarded.” Al Mancini praised owner and star sommelier Bank Atcharawan’s “serious Thai cuisine at a good price.” The Cornish hen and crab fat fried rice seem to be something everyone needs to order once. Zagat calls it, “Exotic Thai cooking and a robust wine selection draw foodies to this casual hot spot serving up traditional seafood, soup and noodle dishes West of the Strip. The unassuming strip-mall exterior gives way to a modern dining area with rustic accents, featuring a glass-walled wine room and a photo mural of street-food vendors.”

Big B’s Texas BBQ Makes Passionate BBQ

Opened three months ago by a husband and wife team hailing from San Antonio and Estonia, respectively, Big B’s Texas BBQ took over the former Jason’s Deli at 3019 St. Rose Parkway and completely reinventing the inside brick-by-brick and board-for-board over the course of just three months. The phrase “work of passion” proves thoroughly appropriate, and on a Saturday afternoon a visit they showed me the ‘cue to be superior in its simplicity, with no lack of down home flare.

Designed as a boot-scootin’ indoor picnic where the big board details a wide range of meats, sides, salads, sandwiches and combo plates, Big B’s brings the concept of true Texas Barbeque to Las Vegas by way of low n’ slow smoking using imported Oak from the Lone Star State with little more than a salt and pepper rub, the resultant crust on items like Beef and Baby Back Ribs a bit robust for flimsy plastic utensils while the smoke is deep to penetrate with a good ring on the brisket and chicken where crisp skin gives way to flesh that is moist and lean.

Explaining the reasons for importing Oak, as well as the use of North Las Vegas’ Nicholas Meats to acquire Beef in place of US Foods, first bites of ‘cue from Big B’s smoker included both Chicken as well as two cuts of Brisket, the lean stuff not particularly flavorful no matter the rub or techniques while the fattier cuts were melt-in-the-mouth tender, actually better on its own than with either style of house-made sauce.

In general trending a bit tomato heavy in terms of sauces as well as BBQ Beans, the first side tasted made by slow-simmering of Brisket from the day before, Creamed Corn and Coleslaw both also need a little work in terms of seasoning while the cornbread and Mac n’ Cheese are as good as any found at a similar operation, the former served as little muffins that are moist and dense without a need for any additional butter at all.

Continuing its ‘naked’ smoking with pork products, the smoky pulled pork featuring a deep sapor completely devoid of sweetness or sauce, Ribs are without doubt a *must* at Big B’s and with the aforementioned issues of cutlery already discussed the decision of whether to order Baby Backs or Beef Ribs is entirely one of personal preference, both presenting competition for best in the city and something to look out for when festival season begins.

Truly going *hot* with Links, each snappy Sausage tinged in Jalapenos with one version also featuring cheese, those with low spice tolerance will be glad to quench their thirst with beer, tea or beverages from a Coke Remix machine, though considering the quality of desserts those with room left over would be well advised to squelch the fire with peach cobbler atop all butter pastry and a crown of ice cream or a plastic clamshell of Banana Pudding with not just ‘Nilla Wafers but also Bruleed fruit dialing up the texture.

[supsystic-gallery id=’31’ position=’center’]

THREE AND A HALF STARS: Offering what may just be the most “authentic” Texas Style ‘cue in a hundred miles, the choice to import Oak a testament to spending a little extra to do things right, Big B’s Texas BBQ still needs a little time to dial in the recipes for sides and sauces, but if and when they do there is real potential to elevate the restaurant from good to great.

RECOMMENDED: Baby Back Ribs, Beef Ribs, Chicken, Banana Pudding, Peach Cobbler.

AVOID: Creamed Corn, Cole Slaw, Lean Brisket.

TIP: Those who don’t fancy Country Western may wish to consider noise-cancelling Headphones or Take-Out because Big B’s is playing it loud n’ Proud.

WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.

Avicii Abuptly Cancels Wynn Residency

Avicii-600x600
Avicii not looking well

Citing “personal reasons,” legendary DJ and cat aficionado, Avicii has canceled all remaining Las Vegas dates at his Wynn Las Vegas residency, but has not canceled any other dates. The reasons for this sudden split was not made known, but both Avicii’s reps and the Wynn confirmed in one way or another that the Wynn residency was canceled.

Avicii did this in 2015 with Wynn for similar reasons but soon came back stronger than ever. However, with Avicii retiring from live DJ’ing, this spells the end of the special relationship Wynn and Avicii had.

XS Las Vegas posted on Instagram:

Due to personal reasons @Avicii has cancelled the remainder of his 2016 @EncoreBeachClub and @XSLasVegas dates, as a result we are pleased to announce that @DillonFrancis will be his replacement this Saturday. Tickets holders will be contacted via email with further instructions.

We hope that whatever is happening, Avicii quickly returns back to the stage and Wynn.

Casino Where Tupac Killed Shutting Down Permanently

0

Formerly known as the Maxim Hotel and Casino, the Westin Las Vegas Hotel, Casino and Spa on Flamingo road will be closing the casino. Starwood Hotels and Resorts said that “lack of revenue” made the decision easy to get rid of the “Max Casino,” which operates 150 slot machines and just six table games.

As part of the redesign and removal of the Casino will be upgraded rooms, new suites, a new salon, redesigned fitness center and a paint job.

Starwood is partially doing this to focus on their other local project, the “W” Brand Boutique Hotel, which will be another redesign of part of the failed SLS Hotel.

Starwood has four other properties in the Las Vegas area, belonging to the Westin, Four Points, and Elements brands. Starwood Preferred Guest members also enjoy earn-and-burn privileges at select Caesars Entertainment properties in Las Vegas and elsewhere.

The building is most famous for the site where Tupac was killed in front in 1996, but doesn’t commemorate it’s history.

Colorful Rocks on Vegas Boulevard Wastes $3.5 Million of Nevada Money

2

Located way off the strip, on the far end of Las Vegas Boulevard, you can’t miss one of the most expensive Nevada public art projects– a bunch of colorful rocks piled on top of each other, like a very large child put them there and forgot them.

Five years in planning and approximately three days to spray-paint and bill someone $3.5 million for colorful rocks, there are seven large chunks of rocks that have been painted really bright to gain attention from aliens from space.

"The Artist"
“The Artist”

This is the work of Ugo “Fingerpaint” Rondinone, an artist known for other really expensive but playful, meditative rock sculptures.

It’s about “thresholds and crossings, of balanced marvels and excessive colors, of casting and gathering and the contrary air between the desert and the city lights,” according to the artist, who doesn’t live in Las Vegas, but has a nice apartment in New York.

According to Rondione, who hasn’t answered how much he made on the exhibit himself, the site of the project isn’t a coincidence.

It’s really near Jean Dry Lake, where land art masterminds Jean Tinguely and Michael Heizer created some of the earliest, most influential “Earthwork interventions” in the 1960s. But they didn’t charge $3.5 Million and did it for the art.

On May 11, the rainbow block towers will be officially open to the public for viewing and ridicule. The piece will be on view for two years, or until the rain washes the paint away.

“When you walk among them, you feel like you’re having this quasi-spiritual experience. You also feel like you’re part of a performance,” said David Walker, executive director of the Nevada Museum of Art, the people who were left with the bill.

Lucky Dragon Finds $55 Million to Finish Casino

0

If we are to believe the PR coming out of this development, they have found a sugar daddy to continue funding the project to completion. This comes only a month or so after reports were announced that people were being laid off, because the developers/owners couldn’t find anyone to continue the funding because the Chinese economy wasn’t looking as prosperous as before.

Even though the small boutique Asian casino launched fast and seemed to be starting well, there were almost immediate problems getting the needed funding for the August 2016 opening. Included in this was the denial of the City of Las Vegas to give them a “tax increment financing” to help them out. When they were denied this, it looked like the last $25 Million might never happen.

Worse was that after the timing went crazy, they said they would be facing a probable $5 million extra in over run costs.

What makes this project really cool is that most of the casino has been developed using EB-5 foreign investments, which were plausible during China’s growing economy. With many Chinese billionaires and millionaires worrying about the possibility that the government might take their money away, they have been looking into US Investments as a safe place for their money.

The project, which is situated between the Golden Steer restaurant and the Allure condominiums, includes a nine-story hotel tower and a separate casino building.

This $139.25 million, 375,000-square-foot, 204-room, is point blank, a very visually dramatic concept, even though it’s a lot smaller than most of the current developments. It’s clearly made for the Chinese and Asian market, with an “authentic Asian culture and gaming experience.”

VitalVegas described the Casino development as finding the money “under the cushions” and implying that the money might be anal in nature.

When this is done, it is good news for Flock and Fowl, which is next door and has already a “must-see” stop for those into the Chinese culture. Al Mancini, food reviewer and part-time Pikachu hunter, said of Flock and Fowl “Expanding the menu really seems unnecessary. The Hainan chicken rice is the star of the show here, and ordering anything else is just superfluous.” Although “cold poached chicken with rice that’s been cooked in chicken stock and a cup of chicken broth…sounds fairly boring, it’s a truly delicious meal thanks to the accompanying condiments.

T-Mobile Adds Hockey Locker Rooms?

0

T-Mobile is pretty damn sure that they are getting a NHL team there to play during the 2017-2018 season. So much so that they’ve already blocked out the dates for a possible team to play during that season, and have added some locker rooms labeled “NHL Locker Rooms.” Whether this is a hopeful addition, or the guys over there know something we don’t, is yet to be seen.

hockt1

‘We’re ready for an NHL team,” said Rick Arpin, of MGM Resorts. ”But our primary motivation was not for a pro sports team. We built this building to get events we couldn’t do otherwise, and pro sports certainly fits in that.”

They are more than “ready,” the arena was built to host hockey. According to T-Mobile Arena General Manager Dan Quinn, it was designed with “hockey in mind.” “If you’re in the upper level, you’ll be able to see everything. It’s an intimate building for one of its size. “That was the intent, we traveled around and saw a lot of different arenas and we took the best components from several of them and incorporated them into our building.”

However, with the NHL expansion committee not yet meeting and voting on both Las Vegas and Quebec City, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen tomorrow. Even if they do meet, the entire Board of Governors of Hockey have to meet almost immediately, otherwise there is no way there would be a team ready for the 2017-2018 season.

Five Hottest Restaurants in Las Vegas Right Now

0

The restaurant scene is changing fast in Las Vegas. Gone are the days that only celebrity Chefs can make name for themselves by spending millions on design and marketing. Now we have a whole new breed of Chefs who made their way via the kitchens of the world to work their way up into their own Vegas kitchen – and then become loved without the need of reality shows and drinking competitions.

Here are the hottest five restaurants that everyone is talking about right now in the culinary world in Las Vegas:

Herringbone in Aria
3730 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89158
Herringbone has become the brunch restaurant where everyone who is anyone goes to be seen. With its beach-roots, market-driven menu, live music and the amazing outdoor space, it’s become one of the hottest spaces in Vegas overnight. Good luck getting in for Brunch if you’ve not made a reservation. Food expert Michael Uzmann called it a “focus on seasonality as well as top-tier ingredients there are few places in the city serving oysters or shellfish of such quality at this hour, not to mention coffee as good as that from LA Mill via Pourover.”

Le Pho Downtown Las Vegas
353 E Bonneville Ave #115, Las Vegas, NV 8910
If you’ve not heard of Le Pho, you’ve not been online lately. Almost every single reviewer in the world has been there, and everyone is astonished about how amazing Pho can be when done by the best Vietnamese Chef in Las Vegas. I had the opportunity to eat at Le Pho with veteran reviewer and part-time unicorn hair stylist, Al Mancini of VegasSeven, who totally gobbled up and loved the pho-dipped banh mi and called the restaurant “Pho-Nomenal.” I agreed with his review and was amazed by the quality: “As soon as it arrived at the table, I knew I was in for a treat. The smell was an intense deep meaty smell, with just enough steam rising from the broth to let me be able to inhale and immediately enjoy. The first taste of the broth was even better, with the unique deep flavor I’ve never had before with Pho. I recognized the flavors but they were more intense, more of them, fresher, better.”

Bardot Brasserie in Aria
Aria, 3730 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109
While Michael Mina has put his name on this restaurant, Chef Josh Smith has made it his own with an amazing menu that rivals the best French restaurants in the world. They just won an award from the Southern Nevada Concierge Club for the “Best French Restaurant” in Las Vegas, and everyone is talking about it. As we said in our interview with him, “The food is clearly French, but also amazingly unique in every dish. From foie gras on top of French toast, to poached eggs and duck on waffles, the food is made to the highest quality, but at the same time something that reminds you of good home cooking at the same time.”

Gordon Ramsey Steak
3655 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Gordon Ramsey not only gave his name to the restaurants, but also occasionally actually makes his way into the kitchen to cook and sometimes entertain guests. Despite being opened a few years ago, it’s one of the hottest, most difficult restaurants to book a reservation on. The food is absolutely excellent, minus some consistency problems that still plague them with the Beef Willington, which despite being the most famous dish from Hell’s Kitchen, named signature dish of the year by someone, occasionally has issues. Last time we were there however, it was perfect however.

Hexx Kitchen + Bar in Paris
3655 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Besides having one of the best views of any restaurant in Las Vegas, and an amazing patio that allows visitors to watch the Bellagio Fountains, their menu is absolutely outstanding. I’ve been eating lunch there frequently, and almost every visit is completely packed. If you don’t make a reservation and come after noon, you’ll probably either wait in line, or not be able to get a seat for an hour or so, if at all. The outside on beautiful days (which there are a lot) is almost always packed with all sorts of tourists and locals. Michael Uzmann called it “the very best 24/7 space in a city where such things are not for lack, the food and service far better than they really need to be while a world-class Chocolate program continues to grow in back.”
