SUGARCANE from Sushi Samba to Open Soon

0

SUGARCANE raw bar grill, the James Beard-nominated Miami eatery, will officially open its doors in Las Vegas this coming November. The 6,376-square-foot, 195-seat restaurant will be located in the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Las Vegas. SUGARCANE raw bar grill’s celebrated culinary concept of globally-inspired small plates unites three distinct kitchens – an open fire grill, raw bar and traditional kitchen – and will be led by Executive Chef and Partner Timon Balloo alongside newly appointed Las Vegas Executive Chef Ryan Nuqui.

“I’m thrilled to bring the SUGARCANE raw bar grill concept – with its laid-back charm and global spirit – to the Las Vegas market. The energy of the city coincides perfectly with our bright, bold and exciting culinary experience, and now we have the opportunity to reach tens of thousands of guests from both the U.S. and around the world,” said Chef Balloo.

“Las Vegas has solidified its position as a global culinary mecca, and we are honored to have the chance to bring such a unique and vibrant concept to the city,” said Shimon Bokovza, Managing Partner of Samba Brands Management. “The newest iteration of SUGARCANE raw bar grill is a stunning visual and culinary evolution of the brand, while maintaining its unique spirit and soul.”

While the small plates take inspiration from all regions of the world, Balloo and Nuqui have created a menu that celebrates the region’s local bounty.

“It is so exciting to bring the flavors of SUGARCANE raw bar grill to Las Vegas,” said Chef Balloo. “One of my favorite dishes is the sea urchin tostada, with layers of oceanic sweet roe, clean crisp jalapeño and finished with an al pastor jam. Another great dish is the shellfish hot pot rice, creamy short grain rice cooked in a luscious broth with clams, cuttlefish and Alaskan king crab, which we know will be a Las Vegas crowd-pleaser.”

Other new dishes featured on the Las Vegas menu include the Pig Ear Pad Thai with papaya salad and Baha Snapper en Papillote with an heirloom tomato sauce vierge.

The open fire grill will yield a mix of meats, seafood and vegetables, including Nduja Quail served with pommes purée and bone jus, Yellowtail Collar and Okinawa Purple Sweet Potato. The traditional kitchen shines with SUGARCANE raw bar grill’s signature dishes including Bacon Wrapped Dates with linguiça and manchego, Brussels Sprouts with orange and sweet soy, Goat Cheese Croquettes with membrillo marmalade and most famously, the Duck & Waffle.

SUGARCANE raw bar grill “reinterprets” raw, providing a rotating selection of crudos and shellfish to include Kinilaw Kanpachi, prepared with coconut cane vinegar, citrus and puffed rice, and West Coast Snapper Ceviche, with aji amarillo, sweet potato and crispy maiz cancha.

Equal parts food and beverage, a 76-seat bar and lounge area offers a striking focal point with a vast rum display featuring one of the largest collections in Las Vegas. The restaurant will also offer SUGARCANE raw bar grill’s signature libations, such as the Spice of Love and Tobacco Rum Old Fashioned. For those interested in a more intimate dining experience, SUGARCANE raw bar grill will also have a 535-square-foot private dining room that seats up to 22 guests.

Award-winning design firm Parts and Labor has created a space inspired by Old Havana that embraces Cuban and Latin American architecture and design. Organic textures, wrought-iron detailing and vintage lighting are seamlessly combined with modern design elements to create a space that is both eclectic and comfortable. A mix of custom-designed furniture pieces, cane-back chairs, inlaid wood flooring, and tray ceilings trimmed in rich red hues carry through the Cuban undertones.

Local Favorite DW Bistro Re-Opens

0

Good stuff from two good guys Bryce Krausman and Dalton Wilson, as DW Bistro Re-Opens at their new location. While the mega-market and restaurant plan they originally had was canceled, everyone in the area is still very happy that they are back doing what they do best: including myself, who occasionally enjoys their amazing food with my son who loves their Mac N’ Cheese.

DW Bistro seemed like a unlikely restaurant in an area that once was barren with good restaurants. However, they took a chance and started a revolution in the South West when no one was willing to invest that type of money and experience into a good restaurant. Whenever anyone talks about where to eat for locals who love good food, a great brunch, DW Bistro is the place to go.

Las Vegas weekly had one of the best reviews of DW:

This food is as aggressive and fun as anything you’ll find across the country. This is Jamaica meets New Mexico, a culinary combo so potent and fresh that it feels distinctly American. Jerk fried chicken and waffles. Slow-cooked pork simmered in New Mexico chilies with eggs and rice. Vegas is lucky it gets to enjoy this adventure every weekend. And like all the other aforementioned fantastic brunch restaurants, DW Bistro makes it feel like it’s not a big deal.

While I was unfortunately without a babysitter for their opening, veteran food reporter and my friend, Al Mancini was there and provided some photos of the event.

Hard Rock Café at Hard Rock Casino Closing Before End of the Year

0

There is sad news for the fans of the Hard Rock Café near their casino on Paradise. Despite only opening in 2009, as one of the most anticipated state of the art Hard Rock Cafes in the world, it didn’t ever catch on.

The Company released the following statement: “Since opening the doors of its first Las Vegas cafe location in 1990, Hard Rock International has been and continues to be committed to Las Vegas. On December 31, 2016, the Hard Rock Cafe location adjacent to Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas (located at 4475 Paradise Road) will be closing. The closing marks a strategic decision by the brand to focus efforts in the market on Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas Strip and Hard Rock LIVE Las Vegas, located at 3771 South Las Vegas Blvd. Employees of the closing cafe will be given priority consideration for open positions at the Las Vegas Strip cafe and LIVE venue.”

This comes only a few weeks after a major shakeup at Hard Rock Café International with their CEO being ousted after a buyout by the Seminole Tribes of Florida.

According to a press release, the company plans to focus its efforts on Hard Rock Cafe and Hard Rock LIVE on the Las Vegas Strip.

On Tuesday, November 15, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, will commemorate the anniversary of the Kefauver Committee hearing, which took place in its building on November 15, 1950, by offering free admission during regular operating hours for Nevada residents. Non-Nevada residents will receive buy-one, get-one admission that day. Kefauver Day at The Mob Museum is sponsored by Zappos.

Kefauver Day at The Mob Museum is held each year to raise awareness of the significance of the U.S. Senate Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce. Launched by U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver, the outcome of these hearings played a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s fight against organized crime, as well as the development of Las Vegas as the nation’s gaming capital.

Among the Museum’s artifacts related to Sen. Kefauver are coonskin cap, gavel and briefcase, all of which are on loan from the University of Tennessee Libraries, Knoxville, Special Collections. Sen. Kefauver first adopted a coonskin hat as a trademark during his 1948 campaign for election to the U.S. Senate. He continued to use the coonskin cap as a trademark throughout his political career which included unsuccessful campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1952 and 1956 and an unsuccessful campaign for the vice presidency as Adlai Stevenson’s running mate in 1956. All three objects, along with others related to the hearings, are on display in the Kefauver Room, located just outside the Museum’s historic courtroom where the Las Vegas Kefauver Committee hearing took place.

Allegiant Air’s Planes Breakdown A Lot

0

Bad News for Las Vegas based Allegiant Air, after a newspaper investigation found that their planes are four times more likely to break down than any other airline. The Tampa Bay Times report published Wednesday said Allegiant jets were forced to make unexpected landings at least 77 times in 2015 for serious mechanical failures.

Making this even scarier is that none of the incidents prompted enforcement action from the Federal Aviation Administration. Turns out that they don’t actually track breakdowns, which could easily show how safe a carrier or a particular plane is.
To do the story, the Times reporters built a database of more than 65,000 records from the FAA themselves and compared Allegiant Air to other airlines.

Yes, it gets worse. The newspaper claims that the company admitted during an interview that their planes break down way too often.

Also Washington Post report earlier this year cited FAA records for Allegiant that show a pattern of safety problems that have triggered a relatively large number of aborted takeoffs, emergency descents and emergency landings from Jan. 1, 2015 to March 2016.

The Tampa Bay Times Story goes into detail about some of the incidents, where passengers were sure they were going to die because of what possibly came from poor maintenance:

Matt Jones fumbled with his cellphone, trying to call his wife to say goodbye, as crew members on Allegiant Flight 822 ordered him to tuck into crash position over Baltimore. “I said to myself, ‘I’m never going to see my wife or my kids or my grandkids again,’” he recalled.

Jessica Stoffel was so afraid on Allegiant Flight 175 over Mesa, Ariz., that she grabbed the stranger next to her and squeezed his hand. “I was terrified and honestly did not think we were going to make it,” she said.

“Now I’m going to die.” FlightAware.com’s flight tracker shows Lisa Cozzolino’s flight, Allegiant Flight 844, circling the gulf and then returning for an unscheduled landing after taking off in June from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.

All major airlines break down once in awhile. But none of them break down in midair more often than Allegiant.

photo1Old Dominion

Proving that they are not your average country band, Old Dominion lend old-fashioned country charm, lyrical wit and rock n’ roll grit into radio-friendly hook-heavy pop nuggets. Old Dominion has emerged as one of the hottest breaking bands in country music, fusing clever lyrics and an infectious sound. The band released their first full-length album Meat and Candy, which Entertainment Weekly called a “deceptively smart, occasionally cheeky, stellar debut.” Old Dominion released their platinum two-week No.1“Break Up With Him” and RIAA certified gold hit “Snapback” prior to their third single “Song For Another Time,” which is climbing the charts now. They spent their summer on Kenny Chesney’s Spread The Love Tour and will headline their Meat and Candy Fall Tour, beginning Sept. 22, with 15 of the dates tapped as Stagecoach Spotlight: Old Dominion Meat and Candy Tour; the first-ever tour produced by the award-winning Stagecoach Music Festival. The ACM and ACCA Breakthrough Duo/Group of the Year are also nominated for two CMA Awards: Best New Artist and Vocal Group of the Year. Old Dominion consists of lead singer Matthew Ramsey, lead guitarist Brad Tursi, multi-instrumentalist Trevor Rosen, bassist Geoff Sprung and drummer Whit Sellers.

Sawyer Brown
With more than three decades of creating 50+ chart singles including country smash hits like “Some Girls Do,” “Step That Step,” “Thank God For You,” and their most recent single “We Got the Night,” Sawyer Brown is always on the move – on the road, on stage, and in their career. Having been described as “the Rolling Stones of Country Music,” Sawyer Brown bounds onto the stage night after night, delivering its own unique brand of high-energy entertainment, and the band remains a perennial favorite at fairs, festivals, theatres, and casinos. After twenty-three albums, 50+ chart singles, CMA, ACM, and CMT awards on the shelf, more than 4,500 shows and counting, and more than a million miles behind them, Sawyer Brown is still seeing the highway miles click by outside their bus window.

No, Camille Desiree Being Anti-Semitic in Vegas is Wrong

2

At one point in my life, I got used to the sort of casual anti-Semitism that often occurs in the workplace in Las Vegas. Since I moved here, I’ve had to hear at least two dozen people in clubs, restaurants and shops talk about “Jews” in a way that is both insulting and bigoted. The comments usually occurred when they would call someone cheap a “Jew” or imply that someone was a crook by them acting “Jewish.” Often I would say something, and they would apologize, just saying it was “a joke.”

Camille Desiree. Neo Nazi or just ignorant?
Camille Desiree. Neo Nazi or just ignorant?

nazi2Enter Camille Desiree, a local in Vegas who made a comment that during Halloween people were being “Jews” by not giving enough candy to her. Several people mentioned on Facebook that was a bigoted comment, anti-Semitic – and instead of people finding these comments disgusting, most people defended it again, as “Just a joke.”

I that she tagged her kids as #nazi and her and her friends responses to inquires was met with anti-Jewish and anti-Israel memes, this isn’t “just a joke.” It’s religious bigotry and anti-Semitism of the worst kind. These “casual comments” don’t just hurt, but they do create an environment for more devious types of bigotry.

nazi1
Tagging Your Kids as #Nazis? Wishful thinking or bad joke?

I know that hatred, bigotry and discrimination remain a fact of daily life for far too many people in this country. But what makes the recent surge in anti-semitism stand out – and what makes it particularly worrying – is the number and range of people who are prepared to ignore it, excuse it and, worst of all, indulge in it.
More than that, the mainstream embrace of low-level, casual bigotry creates fertile ground in which the noxious weed of anti-semitism can take root and grow. Just as one broken window in a neighborhood, left in disrepair, leads to an enviroment in which vandalism and decay is seen as a normal part of life, so casual anti-semitism, left unchallenged, leads to an world in which extremism, and then violence, will thrive.

We need to make clear this is not acceptable from anyone, under any circumstance. Period.

Sandra Mallut Not Executive Chef of Owl, Dog Poops in Kitchen

0

OWL, the brain child of the crazy genius Stephan Galdau is still open despite 24/7 drama, but it seems without Chef Sandra Mallut in the Kitchen. Despite numerous posts claiming that she was joining the local bar and was their new chef, it seems that Mr. Galdau hasn’t been completely honest about who is working in the kitchen as the Chef.

sandra1Ms. Mallut clarified with PaceVegas that she was only hired to help as a consultant for a few weeks, and no longer is invovled with the project.

Mallut told us that, “…the owner got a bit over zealous with the Social Media and was stating that I was the Exec Chef and I had to have him stop which he did. I helped out for a couple weeks only and have moved on to other projects. I had never intended to be the exec chef as I only consult and was referred to him as a consultant.”

This comes only a month after Galdau created drama by attacking dozens of people in the industry, and threatening to sue veteran food reviewer Al Mancini for reporting that his kitchen staff had walked out. That beef between the two we’ve been told has been resolved and they are friendly.

Why is there is a dog in the kitchen?
Why is there is a dog in the kitchen?

On top of this, we’ve been told that OWL is being looked at by the Southern Nevada Health District after several people filed health complaints for a dog in the kitchen. One reviewer on Facebook commented that while they were eating, this dog was going to bathroom behind the bar. Jason Sarcinelli, a former friend of the owner told us that they had bought the dog and then got fake “Service Dog” tags in order to illegally keep it in the restaurant.

What does this mean for Owl? We had high hopes for this place before the owner seemingly lost his mind and attacked everyone he could. Without a Chef, can they really provide the quality food and service they are looking for? We’d love to give them a chance to see if Galdau’s large mouth is at all correct and this is a worth while space to go.
