Ceasars Palace or Cockroach Palace?

0

Caesars Palace promotes itself as “world-renowned luxury” to tourists all over the world, but employees tell a different story about buildings so badly infested with cockroaches that they had to shut entire floors down. Another employee talked to us about going into her office and having hundreds of cockroaches all around her desk and being forced to work while they scurried around.  It was so bad that even their steakhouse, Old Homestead was shut down after cockroaches seemingly took over the restaurant.

An employee, Amanda Garcia (née Berland), who worked in the “In Room Dining” department (Room Service) described an environment to us so bad that when she worked there, her manager would often give instructions on how to kill cockroaches that they found. She was so disgusted with cockroaches overtaking the kitchens, that she spoke to health inspectors about the issues – and that got her fired.

That illegal, and the feds agreed, and according to her, it was and recently ruled in her favor in a Federal National Labor Relations Board action.

In addition to federal whistleblower protection laws, most states make it unlawful to fire employees for reporting employer violations and other acts of misconduct. These laws vary, however, with respect to who is protected (whether public employees or private employees) and to whom the protection is afforded (such as co-workers and other business entities).

But the issues didn’t end with that: an executive at the company started giving lectures to employees about why they could not speak to health inspectors: a severe violation of the law.

The Feds agreed that this was also problem, and the NLRB also ruled that they must not only allow all employees to speak to Health Inspectors without retaliation but they must post a notice that tells all employees that they can report issues like cockroaches to any authority. Now, we are told, there are cockroach “reporting posters” all over worker’s areas in Caesars. Read the posters on my twitter account.

However, employees say things haven’t changed: the hotel has had infestations for years – and unless they shut down entire buildings for weeks and fumigate floor after floor, it may be impossible to ever get rid of the issues – and Caesars may always be cockroach palace.

Trump Pledges to Back Off Prosecuting Legal Marijuana

0

President Trump has pledged to at least one U.S. senator that the Department of Justice won’t interfere with Colorado’s marijuana laws or businesses, a sign that the administration will take a hands-off approach toward legal MJ companies in Las Vegas.

According to The Denver Post, Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner said Friday that he had received a commitment from Trump that U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision in January to revoke several cannabis policy memos – including the Cole Memo – “will not impact Colorado’s legal marijuana industry.”

“Furthermore, President Trump has assured me that he will support a federalism-based legislative solution to fix this states’ rights issue once and for all,” Gardner told The Post.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Gardner’s account was accurate and the president supported states’ rights in the matter, the Associated Press reported.

Gardner had taken a stand against Sessions’ move in January, and has been holding up DOJ appointments as part of a standoff over federal cannabis policy. In addition, Gardner and 17 other senators signed a letter of support in February for states’ rights regarding marijuana legalization and regulation.

Due to Trump’s assurances, Gardner said he’ll end his blockade of appointments, The Post reported.

The news immediately drew praise from cannabis industry insiders.

“We are grateful to Sen. Gardner for standing up for the people of Colorado, as well as to President Trump for respecting states’ rights to adopt their own cannabis policies,” Mason Tvert, vice president of communications at Denver-based VS Strategies, said in a statement.

“We may now be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. This is one more step toward ending the irrational policy of marijuana prohibition, not only in Colorado, but throughout the country.”

The Trump White House has not yet articulated a specific policy with regard to marijuana.

That lack of clarity has contributed to industry speculation that the DOJ may try to crack down on the widespread U.S. cannabis trade, given marijuana’s ongoing status as an illegal Schedule 1 controlled substance, as opposed to the hands-off approach taken by the Obama administration.

But so far, Sessions has not taken any direct action against state-licensed marijuana companies, though he has repeatedly emphasized his disapproval of marijuana in general.

Trump himself has not said much about marijuana since taking office last year, but indicated during the 2016 presidential campaign that he believes marijuana legalization should be left to the states.

The only current federal law that has stopped the DOJ from prosecuting state-licensed medical marijuana companies is the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer Amendment, which prohibits the DOJ from using federal funds to interfere with medical marijuana laws. There is no such protection yet in law for recreational marijuana companies.

The Rohrabacher Amendment is technically a temporary law that must be renewed on an annual basis, meaning there are no permanent protections yet for cannabis companies from federal prosecutors. Trump’s support for a new bill could help push permanent legislation through Congress sooner rather than later.

According to The Washington Post, Gardner “has been talking quietly with other senators about a legislative fix that would, in effect, make clear the federal government cannot interfere with states that have voted to legalize marijuana.”

82% of Las Vegas Police Reject Joseph Lombardo for Sheriff

0

With nearly 82% of Las Vegas officers not voting for Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, the official Police Union will not support and endorse the current Sheriff to be re-elected — with many members seemingly angry about how Sheriff Lombardo handled the October 1st shooting in Vegas.

In order for the LVPPA to give an official endorsement, it is required that 51% of police members cast a vote. According to numbers provided by LVPPA in the email, only 27% of the rank and file officers casted a vote, which suggests that majority of the rank and file officers in Las Vegas do not particularly like Sheriff Lombardo.

LVPPA President Steven Grammas said, “We did not reach the necessary 51% of the membership casting a vote in this endorsement. As such, and in accordance with the Bylaws, the LVPPA will not be endorsing any candidate in this election.”

Unfortunately for the Sheriff, his poor handling of the shooting has made him hated by the rank and file of LVMPD and nationally afigure of suspicion, nationally, and some say an absolute laughingstock within the LVMPD.

According to a LVMPD Detective, ” What is even more apparent is that the officers of the LVMPD who are LVPPA members have no confidence in their current leader. It will be telling to see if Lombardo attempts to use the endorsement of the LVPPA without the members voting. In 2014, he used the slogan ‘endorsed by law enforcement,’ which wasn’t true. Law enforcement overwhelmingly endorsed Larry Burns for Sheriff.”

Lombardo said he was “offended” at the criticisms he took for handling the shooting and even went as far to say “There is no conspiracy between the FBI, between LVMPD and the MGM. Nobody is attempting to hide anything in reference to this investigation. The dynamics and the size of this investigation requires us to go through voluminous amounts of information in order to draw an accurate picture.”

Why do Movies and Games Love Destroying Las Vegas?

0

Las Vegas – the City of Lights, the Entertainment Capital of the World, and Hollywood’s number one target for destruction. Indeed, the gambling haven in the middle of the Nevada desert has been destroyed numerous times in film over the years. Mars Attacks!, Con Air, and Godzilla have all depicted ruin and rubble in the famous city. It hasn’t stopped there either, and video games like Fallout: New Vegas have got in on the action and portrayed the demise of Sin City. Why is Vegas such a popular target for destruction? Is it down to it being one of the most famous locations in the world?

Las Vegas Destruction in Gaming

If you’re looking for a game set in a scary vision of Vegas hundreds of years from now, Fallout: New Vegas has to be your first point of call. The post-apocalyptic series is one of the most popular franchises in videogame history, and the fourth installment, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released by Bethesda Entertainment in 2010 is considered by some fans to be the best. It takes place in the year 2281, in a world devastated by “The Great War” between the United States and China. The city known as Las Vegas has become New Vegas, and it is being ruled by a businessman known as Mr House and his army of Securitron robots. Although Vegas isn’t completely ruined in the game, it is painted in a completely different light to the city we know today. It’s dark, dingy, and terrifying – making for an excellent setting for a game like Fallout. While open-world adventures are much-loved by console players, some people prefer simpler arcade-style offerings. For iGaming players, Microgaming’s popular Lost Vegas slot game at Betway-Casino features a zombie apocalypse in Las Vegas, in which players can choose between playing as the survivors or as the zombies. This version of the famous city is on the humorous (but still destroyed) side, with the most common Vegas tribes appearing as zombies: Elvis impersonators, tourists and more. In more realistic terms, a pretty cool third-person shooter and racing game released in 2000 imagined a terrorist attack in Sin City. This was Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas developed by N-Space for PlayStation and Microsoft Windows. In the game, players had the opportunity to take on the terrorists as protagonist John McClane, while at the same time shooting up and destroying casinos and property in the gambling hotspot.

Carnage in Sin City in Film

However, Las Vegas has had even more of a raw deal in cinema than it has had in gaming. There have been countless films over the years that have seen various landmarks in the city torn to shreds and completely annihilated. One of the most memorable destructions of Vegas has to be in Tim Burton’s 1996 sci-fi spoof Mars Attacks! The film, which featured a stellar cast of A-listers including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, and Michael J. Fox, brought in over $101.3 million domestically, and envisioned what it would be like if aliens came to Earth hell-bent on ending the human race – for fun. While a lot of carnage and hilarity ensued all over, the scene in the Nevada city will live long in the memory of viewers of the Warner Bros. film. The Martians lay waste to Vegas, firing at everyone and everything in sight. The city didn’t stand a chance. In 2014’s Godzilla from Gareth Edwards, Las Vegas was home to a fair amount of mayhem as well. The MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) emerged from a spore in Nevada and preceded to devastate all the buildings on the Strip. The huge beast simply trampled all over the casinos and hotels, instantly turning them to rubble. Another example is in Con Air, the 1997 action from director Simon West. In one of the final scenes, the plane carrying all the convicts crashlands on the Vegas strip, before Nicholas Cage sets off on an awesome chase to stop John Malkovich. It’s scenes like these that might make people slightly less inclined to visit the main strip in Vegas.

The list of films where the gambling capital of America has been destroyed goes on. Could there be a metaphorical reason as to why film and gaming writers love to tear Vegas down? Could it just be due to the exciting nature of the city which makes it stand out?

The reason why Las Vegas is such a prime target for destruction is probably because it is so recognisable. Most viewers or players from all over the world would know this famous location. Because it is well-known, it makes the destruction and carnage all the more real. If this was going on in a fictional place it would be harder for the audience to relate. It’s great to see Las Vegas in the mainstream so frequently, but let’s hope that it continues to be destroyed on our screens.

Federal Courts: Vegas Medical Marijuana Card Holders Banned from Owning Guns

0

Now out of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the three judge panel ruled recently that registered medical marijuana patients can’t legally own guns because of the federal prohibition on cannabis, according to a Fortune Magazine report.

“Wilson claimed that she doesn’t actually use marijuana, she simply obtained a card to show her support for its legalization. The appeals court agreed with guidelines from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that firearms sellers should assume that medical marijuana card holders use the drug.”

The case, which originated in Nevada, is likely to be appealed. As the attorney looking to overturn the ruling notes: “We live in a world where having a medical marijuana card is enough to say you don’t get a gun, but if you’re on the no fly list your constitutional right is still protected.”

The Justice Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has left no doubt where it stands. Last year, the ATF spelled out the marijuana prohibition in boldface type on gun purchase forms.

“Any person who uses or is addicted to marijuana, regardless of whether his or her state has passed legislation authorizing marijuana use for medical purposes … is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition,” ATF spokeswoman Janice L. Kemp said in an email to The Associated Press.

The picture has become murkier under Trump, a Republican whose attorney general, Jeff Sessions, has long denounced the drug. Sessions recently rescinded a Barack Obama-era policy that was deferential to states’ permissive marijuana laws. Now, federal prosecutors in states that allow drug sales must decide whether to crack down on the marijuana trade.

This is the “Worst Show in Las Vegas.”

0

The Worst Show in Vegas” isn’t what you expect when you hear the name. It’s actually quite entertaining.

The show stars Yurdi Worst, a magician from Austria, and his long-lost younger siblings, Judy and Brock, as they live their dream of having their own show in Las Vegas.

This unconventional approach to a variety show consists of family dynamics to which we can all relate (even if your brother isn’t a magician). Each character brings his or her own style of entertainment to fill the show with genuinely good, clean fun in a family-friendly setting (a rare thing to find in Las Vegas these days).

“This is no Vegas cookie-cutter show,” according to Lynetta Welch, a Vegas local. “It’s a fun, clean, unique, feel-good show that’s packed with talent. There is magic, music, comedy and juggling … something for everyone.”

Rory Johnston stars as Austrian magician Yurdi Worst. Rory started his show business career when he joined the circus at age 17. He was trained in the world of theme parks at Walt Disney World, where he worked for four years. He has appeared in various other Las Vegas shows.

Rory is joined by SJ (Sarah Jessica Rhodes) as Judy Worst. SJ is no stranger to the Las Vegas stage. She has acted, sang, danced and choreographed in several productions ranging from “West Side Story” to “The Sound of Music.”

Comedic juggler Jacob Jax plays Brock Worst in this show. Jacob cut his teeth in show business doing more than 5,000 shows on the street in Las Vegas. His talents include comedy, magic, juggling and masterfully controlling a crowd.

Rounding out the show is Botielus, as cousin Weedi Worst. Botielus is Las Vegas’s most rockin’ accordionist, playing lots of rock and pop not usually associated with the squeezebox. He has appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and many other television and radio shows.

“The show kept us smiling and laughing throughout,” Jen Krammer, another Vegas local, said. “The Worst family members are super funny and talented.”

Whether you’re on vacation with the family, in town for a few days on spring break with friends, or just looking for unique entertainment, “The Worst Show in Vegas” is an experience you will for sure tell your friends about. After all, what other show hands out chocolate chip cookies?

The show is approximately 60 minutes in length and is appropriate for all ages. Guests who arrive early are eligible to win an upgrade to watch the show from the “Worst Seats” (don’t worry, it really is an upgrade!), and everyone is invited to stay after to take pictures with the Worst family and purchase the “Worst” souvenir T-shirt.

“The Worst Show in Vegas” runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday through May 2018 at the intimate Night Owl Showroom in the Hooters Casino Hotel, 115 E. Tropicana Ave., Las Vegas. Tickets cost $54.25 for general admission and $65.15 for premium, and they can be purchased at www.worstshowinvegas.com.

Wynn Resorts Gets $800M Bank Loan from Deutsche Bank To Pay Settlements

0

Wynn Resorts has secured an $800 million line to credit to pay for a multibillion-dollar settlement. The company, which is undergoing a leadership shakeup due to a separate sex scandal and ensuing stockholder revolt, closed a 364-day term loan from Deutsche Bank. Wynn Resorts plans to use the proceeds from the financing, as well as cash on hand, to pay a $2.6 billion settlement to Japanese pachinko magnate Kazuo Okada, who once owned half the company. The settlement is unrelated to the sexual misconduct allegations involving its founder, Steve Wynn.

Last week, Wynn Resorts and Okada’s Aruze USA, a subsidiary of Universal Entertainment Corporation, settled a lawsuit that has lingered since 2012. The dispute stemmed from the forced redemption of Aruze’s 25.5 million shares of Wynn common stock. Okada was pushed out after the FBI launched an investigation into his firm’s possible violations relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Aruze’s stake in the company now has a value of around $4.9 billion.

The settlement came as Wynn Resorts dealt with the fallout from sexual misconduct allegation against its founder Steve Wynn. In January, the Wall Street Journal reported the story of a manicurist who claims that Wynn forced her to have sex with him. More accusers then came forward, with details of encounters stretching back to the 1970s. The newest allegations involved two massage therapists who claim that Wynn coerced them into performing sexual acts more than 50 times between 2006 to 2009.

Wynn resigned last month as chairman and chief executive of the company that bears his name. He was followed out the door by two board members, Ray Irani and Alvin Shoemaker, who announced their departure last week. Wynn has denied the allegations against him, describing the claims of his accusers as “preposterous.”

The accusations have led to several lawsuits from stockholders, who claim that the company engaged in a coverup of Wynn’s alleged misdeeds. Massachusetts pension fund Norfolk Retirement System, Pennsylvania-based Operating Engineers and Construction Pension Fund and investors John and Joan Ferris are the plaintiffs in class action suits against Wynn.

The $2.6 billion agreement settles all claims between Wynn, Aruze and Universal. The settlement, which covers the principal amount from the promissory note and interest, must be paid by March 31.

Shooting At Vegas Trans Bar Leaves Unanswered Questions

0

In the early hours last month, an unknown individual shot into Las Vegas’ only transgender club, injuring at least two people. The windows were covered in bright ads along with a trans flag bearing a silhouetted image of a woman below the bar’s name, the Las Vegas Lounge.

It’s worth recounting this image not to set the scene but also to make the observation: the shooter could not have seen inside to target any individual.

Black trans woman Callie Lou-Bee Haywood was injured in the shooting and was taken to the hospital. She reported on Facebook that “the bullets shattered my bones and they’re broken in my leg!”

“This pain is beyond excruciating,” she wrote in a comment.

As Haywood also noted on Facebook, the circumstances surrounding the attack indicate it was a message that “trans people are not welcome here.” The details are still being released, but the attack was followed by another tragedy to which trans people are all too: The shooting received almost no media coverage.

According to police, “the suspect arrived on foot, walked by the lounge, pulled out a gun and shot into the building without warning from a parking lot, police said. Multiple people were inside the business, and no one saw the gunman before he ran away.”

Beauty Bar Mocks Domestic Violence in Bad Advertisement

0

In probably one of the poorest thought out sidewalk advertisements, Beauty Bar Las Vegas has found itself the target of pretty much every single Las Vegas woman on Facebook.

After posting a sign on April 14th on the street in front of their establishment on Freemont Street, where they mocked Domestic Violence by saying that they “Like my Beer like I like My Violence: Domestic,” they quickly found more than a few people posting photos on Facebook exposing the sign and vowing never to go there again.

Beauty Bar Las Vegas, Domestic Violence Joke Not Funny
Beauty Bar Las Vegas, Domestic Violence Joke Not Funny

The sign was not only horribly insensitive to victims of domestic violence, but seemed to be borderline racist as the sign was written on a Dos Equis board. Dos Equis is one of the most popular Mexican beers in the United States and Mexico, and in a very political environment such as now, this type of sign might be considered somewhat racist or anti-immigrant.

One of the owners, Corey Harrison of Pawn Stars is a Trump Supporter.

We called Beauty Bar and someone picked up and identified herself as the Manager and confirmed the sign to be real. We could not make out her name, but she did say that it was a “poorly thought-out bad joke” and that “they take full responsibility” for it.

Beauty Bar describes itself as the “original bar and music venue on East Fremont Street. Owned by Darin Feinstein and Pawn Star Corey Harrison, Beauty Bar brings a casual retro vibe to Downtown Las Vegas.”

Update 4/15/2016 9:46: Dos Equis Issued the Following Statement: ”

“We were recently made aware of this sign and are currently working to contact the bar regarding this matter. However, we want to assure you that we absolutely, unequivocally do not support messaging of this nature. Violence of any sort is never funny, and making light of it certainly is not something Dos Equis condones or stands behind.”

Sexual Assault Lawsuits Filed Against Steve Wynn

0

A massage therapist has claimed in a new lawsuit that casino mogul Steve Wynn used his power to coerce her into sexual acts, making her the latest woman to accuse the billionaire of sexual misconduct.

Wynn forced her into sexual acts about a dozen times in 2011-2012 while she was an employee of Wynn Resorts, giving her a $1,000 “tip” after each massage and telling her to never to talk about it, according to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in Nevada by an unnamed 49-year-old woman.

The new lawsuit came after authorities revealed this week that two women filed police reports against Wynn in Las Vegas over allegations dating from the 1970s. A woman told police she had a child with casino mogul Steve Wynn after he raped her, while another reported she was forced to resign from a Las Vegas job after she refused to have sex with him.
