Las Vegas Police Will Stop Working with ICE
The short versionThe Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department changed its jail policy in February 2019 so immigrants booked on minor traffic offenses and low level misdemeanors would not be turned over to ICE. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo directed the change, a day after activists protested the department's ICE agreement.
Las Vegas police are changing their policies on turning over certain immigrants who are living in the country illegally to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Las Vegas Sun reports police lobbyist Chuck Callaway says Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo (Republican) has directed the jail not to turn over those immigrants in the country illegally who are booked for minor traffic crimes and other low-level misdemeanors.
The change comes a day after activists held a protest and news conference outside the police department in opposition to the ICE agreement.
Since then. Metro ended its 287(g) agreement with ICE in October 2019 after a federal court ruling, and later applied to rejoin the program under Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
