Is the Best Bar in the World in Vegas?

0

If you’re to believe the judges of the 10th Annual Spirited Awards, announced at the glorious New Orleans Sheraton, the best bar in the world is indeed here in Las Vegas and is local favorite, Herbs and Rye. In this annual gathering of cocktail experts, bartenders and world renown drunks, we aren’t sure what exactly made them “the best,” but surely agree with the results. The Best Bars are indeed in Las Vegas, and Herbs and Rye, is one of the best.

According to Vegas Seven, owner Nectaly Mendoza said “To be the first [Las Vegas bar] to ever make it to the Top 4 was enough for us. To actually win—it was surrea. I truly feel that it’s always been within our reach, we just had a tougher path than a lot of the other major cities. I always knew it was obtainable, I just didn’t know when or how we were going to get there, and now we’re here.”

Mendoza was quoted that he opened the bar because he “wanted a place people can go to get great food, great cocktails and not pay a fortune. I’ve been to great restaurants where the cocktails aren’t good and I’ve been to a cocktail bar but the food isn’t good. I wanted an equal balance between the two. A local place where people leave feeling the experience was worth it and they would return. We have customers who come back three to four times a week.”

0

Today, Insomniac announced the recipients of funds raised by the company’s charitable giving initiative, Insomniac Cares, during North America’s largest dance music festival, EDC Las Vegas 2016. Three amazing Las Vegas organizations were selected to receive $40,000 each, generated from Insomniac’s $1 per ticket and $10 per guest list attendee allocation. This year, Insomniac will support the incredible work of the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, Emergency Medicine Resident Research Fund and Injured Police Officers Fund.

“Thanks to all the incredible Headliners who celebrated EDC’s 20th anniversary this year, we were able to collect thousands of dollars in ticket and guest list donations for Insomniac Cares,” said Pasquale Rotella, Founder and CEO of Insomniac. “Las Vegas has done so much for us since 2011. It’s an amazing feeling to give back to some of the groups that do good work in the community. I’m proud to present funds to Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, Injured Police Officers Fund, and Emergency Medicine Resident Research Fund.”

The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation (NCCF) provides services to improve the quality of life for critically ill children and their families. Insomniac’s donation will benefit NCCF’s Project A.R.K. which houses the financial, educational and emotional support services offered free of charge.

“It is hard to find the words of love, gratitude and appreciation to all those associated with the incredible experience of EDC 2016 here in Las Vegas,” said Jeff Gordon, President and CEO of NCCF. “We are so thankful to have been chosen as one of the fortunate charities to have benefited from this amazing effort by so many. Pasquale, and the staff of Insomniac, you are simply amazing and we only hope you all realize the very positive impact you have made in our community, and to the children and families we serve at the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.”

On Friday, July 22, Insomniac employees traveled to Las Vegas to witness firsthand the wonderful impact of NCCF’s Camp Cartwheel, an outdoor three-night camp experience for children with cancer or other critical illnesses, providing rehabilitative services, recreational activities, and a beautiful stress-free, expressive environment. During Insomniac’s time at Camp Cartwheel, employees interacted with campers and participated in a variety of activities, including a tour around the campgrounds, tutu making and dancing at closing ceremony.

The Injured Police Officers Fund (IPOF) reduces the financial burden suffered by police officers and their families in the event of a line of duty injury or death. IPOF assists thousands of offers in Nevada by providing monetary assistance to them and their loved ones.

Emergency Medicine Resident Research Fund is an established gift fund used to support resident research activities within the University of Nevada School of Medicine Foundation’s Emergency Medicine department. The physicians that planned and directed the care for EDC Las Vegas are local physicians, involved in the teaching and training of emergency medicine residents for the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Both the Emergency Medicine Resident Research Fund and IPOF have been recipients of Insomniac Cares donations for all six years EDC has been held in Las Vegas.

Insomniac has donated more than $540,000 to local Las Vegas charities since 2011 with funds raised from EDC Las Vegas. Over the past two years, the company has also collected almost $190,000 through its pioneering EDC Week Charity Auction, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to worthwhile nonprofits. Past charity recipients have included the HELP’s Shannon West Homeless Youth Center, Clark County School District’s School-Community Partnership Program, Culture Shock Las Vegas, Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Speedway Children’s Charity – Las Vegas Chapter and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. Since the Insomniac Cares program started in 2011, the company has collaborated with over 30 nonprofit organizations, both local and national, and donated over $1.4 million.

Celebrity Restaurants New “Mall Anchor”

0

Really interesting story from CNBC that says that for the first time restaurant sales are now surpassing supermarket sales, and more importantly, are driving retail sales and people to malls.

“It changes the landscape of retail real estate fundamentally, because what we have is a really fundamental shift in the different categories that are performing well and those that are struggling,” said Melina Cordero, CBRE’s head of retail research in the Americas. “With restaurants that are coming in with strong, high growth, they’re sort of the saving grace for landlords of these retail spaces to come in and drive traffic and sales.”

Finally, from Wolfgang Puck in Las Vegas to Bryan Voltaggio in Washington, D.C., the celebrity chef restaurant is fast becoming the new department store as a retail anchor. Consumers, however, say they may be drawn in by the name, but if they’re going to keep coming back, the food had better be good.

This is a common theme you should be reading about when it comes to commercial real estate and success in Vegas. As food becomes the “new anchor,” and online versus offline are more and blurred, we need to understand what this means to our business. Retail Trends to Watch in 2016: Food as the True Anchor is a great article about this, and highly recommended.

Feds Look to Seize Neil Moffitt’s Apartment as Part of Money Laundering Investigation

0

As Neil Moffitt attempts to extricate Hakassan from the mess of their former Chairman who disappeared suddenly and has been named as part of one of the biggest money laundering scandals in the world, there may be some more issues.  As part of the attempt to recover funds stolen, the feds are going as deep as possible to get the money.

According to AVClub.com, “Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a series of lawsuits alleging that Malaysian officials had misappropriated more than $3.5 billion from 1Malaysia Development Bhd., a fund designed to invest in the Malaysian economy. According to The Wall Street Journal, the DoJ has named Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak as an active participant in the scheme, funneling money from the fund into his personal bank account in what Attorney General Loretta Lynch calls “[defrauding] the Malaysian people … on an enormous scale.”

But what did Razak and his cronies (allegedly) buy with all this (allegedly) stolen money? According to the BBC, a couple of luxury hotels, property in New York, London, and California, a private jet, a handful of very expensive Impressionist paintings, rights to songs from the EMI back catalog—oh yeah, and funding for the movie The Wolf Of Wall Street.”

What does this have to do with Neil Moffitt, the CEO of Hakkasan still?

Well, according to court documents, properties by the former Chairman of Hakassan were also being “managed” by Moffitt, after being transferred in theory to hide the money as part of a complex money laundering scheme.

Well, the feds want those apartments back, according to the filling:

On January 21, 2014, QUBAISI assigned his interest in the Purchase Agreement to “212 West 18th Street LLC f/k/a Al Qubaisi 212 West 18th Street LLC.”
QUBAISI signed on behalf of himself as the assignor, and also on behalf of “Al Qubaisi 212 West 18th Street LLC” as the assignee. Neil Moffitt (“Moffitt”) signed as the
Manager of “Al Qubaisi 212 West 18th Street LLC.”

The property was purchased by “212 West 18th Street LLC” by deed dated January 21, 2014, for a purchase price of $50,912,500. Moffitt signed as the Manager of
“212 West 18th Street LLC.” Moffitt manages or managed several properties on behalf of QUBAISI.

On March 9, 2015, $158,664.71 was transferred from the Vasco Account to an account at J.P. Morgan Chase maintained by Moffitt. Payment details on the wire read: “WALKER TOWER COMPLETE EXPENSES . . . TOTAL TO 2.20.2015.”

This is the apartment the NYPOST claimed was being sold by Moffitt at a huge discount a while back.

Hopefully this will be the end of this, and Hakassan can move on from this disaster and their relationship with their former Chairman. There are no allegations that Moffitt  was actively involved in money laundering, there are no allegations that Hakassan investment money was part of the money laundering.

Woman Claims Wynn Club Security Ignored Sexual Assault

0

Laura Nichols of San Francisco claims that she was sexually assaulted at the XS Club during a pool party at the Wynn, and that instead of helping he,r security staff handcuffed her and shamed her publicly. Their response is very “legalize” but personally, handcuffing a potential victim by civilian security seems a little on the strange side — but I understand to some degree why they had to listen to both sides and then contact LVMPD.

Still, something is wrong that a sexual assault victim is treated this way, instead of being offered assistance, counseling, and really looking into the case. It’s unfortunate that often sexual assaults in clubs are not reported, and that when they are, this is the response.

Making this worse, she was BANNED from the Wynn for reporting to sexual assault, and told she could never return. Hopefully this will be resolved, and I trust the Wynn staff to look into it seriously.

Wynn PR said:

“We would not want any guest to have the experience that has been reported. We take safety and security very seriously and act immediately when any assault is reported. In this case, both guests were actively involved in a physical altercation in a pool when our security reached them. As with any act of violence between two people in the club, they were separated, restrained and interviewed. Upon hearing the two conflicting reports, we contacted Las Vegas Metro Police to take action they believe appropriate. Clearly, investigation and prosecution of an assault rests with law enforcement and the courts. We have reached out to the female guest to offer whatever assistance we can.”

Taco Bell To Add Alcoholic Drinks

Yes, Taco Bell is going to be serving alcoholic drinks  in Las Vegas, in what will become their flagship location.

The new Las Vegas Taco Bell Cantina will be centrally-located on the Las Vegas Strip on Harmon Corner, directly across from CityCenter and The Cosmopolitan Hotel.

Taco Bell Cantinas serve shareable dishes, beer, wine, sangria and liquor-infused slushie drinks dubbed Twisted Freezes.

Eight flavors will be available in Las Vegas. Alcohol choices include rum, tequila or vodka. Some current flavors are the “Mountain Dew Baja Blast,” “Cantina Punch” and the “Cantina Margarita,” Taco Bell said. Freezes can be ordered without alcohol, as well.

“Expansion into urban markets is a key focus for us both this year and over the course of the next several years,” said Brian Niccol, Chief Executive Officer at Taco Bell Corp. “When we talked about where to establish a flagship store, it didn’t take long to realize that having a presence in the heart of Vegas would undoubtedly create a unique, distinctive and fun destination and experience for Taco Bell fans.”

According to Eater Las Vegas: “What happens in Vegas isn’t staying in Vegas, though — Taco Bell has plans to expand its Cantina concept (which is currently two locations strong) to other markets. The Vegas location will be the Cantina’s first flagship. Taco Bell Cantina debuted in Chicago last September, and a San Francisco outpost followed a few weeks later.”
