48-year-old former Las Vegas kindergarten teacher has been sentenced to 12½ years to life in state prison, but not before telling a judge he still loves the teenage girl he was convicted of kidnapping.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Melvyn Perry Sprowson Jr. used his last courtroom appearance to cast his relationship with the girl as consensual. She was 16 at the time. Sprowson said he intended on keeping the girl in his apartment until she turned old enough that the two could get married. According to the victim’s testimony at trial, Sprowson removed her from school and prevented boys from entering his apartment while she was there.
Jurors found him guilty March 31 of keeping the teen in his apartment for two months in 2013 and using her in pornography. He was also convicted of child abuse.
Sprowson acted as his own attorney at trial. Sprowson met the high school sophomore through an internet ad, and prosecutors say he concealed her identity with baggy clothes and a baseball cap when they left his apartment.
